Meaningful Student Involvement in Education Decision-Making These roles for students are often addressed as democratic practices. In this area, students partner with educators to make decisions about curricula, calendar year planning, building design, and many more issues. They join boards of education at all levels, including local, district, and state boards. Education agencies engage students as staff in their programs and engage students in grant making, school assessment, and other areas. In a growing number of local schools, educators are allowing students to take a governing role in enforcing discipline policies, and using them to educate students. Students are also participating in establishing and enforcing codes of conduct, and making decisions about teacher and administrator hiring and firing. Featured Resource The American School Board Journal addresses students on school boards in their Jan. '03 issue.

However, they have been active supporters of the university throughout the years, frequently volunteering their time and financial support to a diverse number of activities. Larry graduated from Indiana State with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 1974. After graduation Larry maintained his ties to the university and became an active member of Alumni Council and was an Alumni/Admissions volunteer working to inform and recruit students to his alma mater. In 1996 he was selected to serve on the ISU Foundation Board and became its vice president in 2000.

By Rick Callahan Associated Press Writer May 17, 2004 6:31 PM
INDIANAPOLIS Indiana's black leaders marked the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark desegregation ruling Monday, recalling it as a key step in the struggle toward racial equality that continues to this day. With black and white schoolchildren among the hundreds in attendance at the ceremony in the Statehouse Rotunda, State Rep. William Crawford called the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling one of the defining moments of the civil rights movement. But he said inequalities remain in American schools and society and that the U.S. Constitution is still "evolving" as lawmakers and courts work to expand freedom. "The Constitution was a promise, emancipation was a promise, Brown was a promise, the civil rights movement was a promise, but it's up to us to accept the challenge to make that promise a reality," said Crawford, D-Indianapolis.
