Equality is centrally important to Friends, who strive to address "that of God" in each person. Quaker worship and decision-making are both shaped by a common search for the Truth as revealed by the prompting of the Spirit. In practical terms, one result is that Quaker organizations make many of their decisions by a process of gradually discerning, as a community, what is the best decision for the entire group in other words, by building consensus. Another result of the Quaker belief in equality is that many Friends are active in social justice concerns, sharing the conviction that each of us is called to work for peace and understanding, treat all persons with respect regardless of differences, and discern the active presence of the Spirit at work in the world among us. Some Quaker meetings worship in silence, with attenders providing "vocal ministry" as they are led by the Spirit. Others have pastors, and follow a programmed tradition similar to many Protestant Christian denominations. In either case, Friends believe that each person is called to be a minister to others.

Class action status is being sought in a $25 billion dollar lawsuit filed against the federal government and three Roman Catholic boarding schools. The schools named in the suit include St. Francis Mission school on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation, St. Paul's in Marty, the headquarters of the Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Holy Rosary on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, all of which educated Sioux children in South Dakota. The suits were filed by five Sioux who claim they were abused at the schools, and there may be thousands of other students who could join the suit. The plaintiffs allege various forms of abuse by the priests and nuns, including beatings and sexual abuse while attending the boarding schools as a federal program to induce Indians to assimilate into white society.
If you feel you qualify for damages or remedies that might be awarded in this class action please fill out the form below.

1900 Census - Colorado Indian Industrial Schools
Ft. Lewis Grand Junction Indian Boarding School at Fort Lewis, 1895
(Photo courtesy of Fort Lewis College Center of Southwest Studies)
The Colorado State Archives volunteer, Connie Ryan, has extracted names from the Fort Lewis and Grand Junction Indian Industrial Schools 1900 Federal Census. These enumerations were slightly different from the usual 1900 Census entries or the Federal Indian Census as there was a special section, "Special Inquiries Relating to Indians." The main section included the headings found on the 1900 Federal Census. In addition, however, this special section listed the tribe of the Indian as well as the tribe of his/her father and mother. There is also a heading entitled "Mixed Blood" which asked if the Indian had any white blood and how much. In the Grand Junction index several additional headings are usually filled out including, "Conjugal Condition," "Citizenship" and "Dwelling" ("Is this Indian living in a fixed or in a movable dwelling?"). The information found in these indexes is especially helpful since the Federal Indian Census before 1930 provided only information on the person's name, date of birth, gender, and relationship to the head of the family. After 1930 the Census provided information on the individual's degree of Indian blood, marital status, ward status, place of residence, and also included miscellaneous commentary. For a further explanation of the Federal Census and the Indian Census from 1885-1944, please see

Professional Practices and Student Teaching: Elementary, Secondary, and All Grade
Program Description
A full semester of student teaching is required by the faculty for the student’s professional development, particularly in instances where teaching experience in both a major and minor area, in different grade levels, or in different types of school settings is sought. In addition to student teaching, a practicum of six weeks often is required for those students who wish to add an endorsement to the basic license being sought. Both student teaching and practicums are full-day, off-campus, school-based experiences that are completed in the number of consecutive weeks associated with the type of experience. The extent of actual student teacher or practicum student involvement and the assumption of full class responsibilities rest upon the mutual agreement of the student, the cooperating teacher, and the university supervisor. The student teaching experience has been carefully designed to be as realistic and intensive as actual teaching. This includes placing student teachers in schools with carefully selected and qualified supervising teachers. Supervision from the university is provided by university faculty or specialists who have been successful classroom teachers.
Application Process
Participation in the program begins by attending a Student Teaching Information Session and with the filing of an Application for Student Teaching before the end of the fall semester of the academic year that precedes the year in which the student teaching or practicum is to be done. (Example: apply Fall 2000 for student teaching Fall 2001 or Spring 2002). The application must be submitted to the campus through which the student will receive his/her certification or degree. Student teaching or practicums will be completed through the campus where the methods course(s) are taken unless an exception is granted by the appropriate authority.

Blessed in our heritage, challenged in our future, we venture on with joy. Our Logo The Tau (cross) is the signature style used by St. Francis of Assisi. One source where it appears is on his letter to his friar and friend, Brother Leo. The circular Franciscan cord, part of our former habit and now on our official pin, has three knots signifying our three vows. Foundress and Early History Demonstrating her courage to venture, on the feast of the Epiphany, 1851, 24-year-old
S. Theresa Hackelmeier arrived at a log cabin in Oldenburg, Indiana. She had ignored the social conventions of her day in order to travel alone from her convent in Vienna, Austria, when her companion turned back. She came by way of ship to New York and then by the Erie Canal and Ohio River until she reached Lawrenceburg and was met by horse and buggy to be taken to Oldenburg. In response to the request of Fr. Francis Joseph Rudolf, missionary pastor of Holy Family Church in Oldenburg, she had come to found an American religious congregation at Oldenburg that would teach the German-speaking children and care for the children orphaned by the 1847 cholera epidemic of southeastern Indiana. S. Theresa – soon to be called Mother Theresa – was joined at Oldenburg by three women. One of them was later destined to become Mother Michaela. In June Theresa Dreer, later Mother Antonia, arrived.

100. History: Education History - Jamestown, Indiana, USA
the Historical Society s History of Boone County, indiana is $15.000 Despite improvements to the school in 1906, the was condemned by the State Board of Health
http://www.bccn.boone.in.us/jamestown/edhistory.htm
History: Education History
Between 1832 and 1837 private schools were established in all of the new settlements. A schoolhouse was established in Jackson Township in 1835 and provided what is described by Harden as 'rudimentary instruction' for pupils who came through the forests and swamps to attend. Schools in the county at this time were supported by subscription and settlers took turns boarding the teacher as part of their pay. School terms ran from six to twelve weeks. The first school in Jamestown, built of rounded logs and heated by a huge fireplace, was located near the Boone-Hendricks County line. Another school building stood west of Jamestown and yet a third, at a later date, was located on the north side of Main Street at the west end of the business district. These schools operated under the jurisdiction of the district school system. By the 1870's, nine one-room schools were operating in Jackson Township. These nine schools were consolidated into two, one school in Jamestown and one in Advance. The Jamestown School was erected of brick in 1873 at a cost of $12,000 on land said to have been donated by John B. Couch. It should be noted that the cost figure cited in the Historical Society's History of Boone County, Indiana is $15.000. Elementary and high school students were transported to the new school by means of horse drawn school hack, the precursor of the modern school bus. The facility was heated by stoves until a steam heating plant was installed during the holiday vacation of 1906-1907. Despite improvements to the school in 1906, the structure was condemned by the State Board of Health in 1907. Permission was granted to hold classes in the building for the 1907-1908 school year. If repairs and changes were made, the condemnation was to be lifted.
