Alternative School Calendars: Smart Idea or Senseless Experiment?
If American students are to compete effectively in a global economy, do they need to spend substantially more time in school? Would increasing the length of the school year or school day raise students' achievement, or would it be more advantageous to alter how we use the time we currently have? Many school systems are experimenting with alternative instructional schedules in an attempt to find out. Included: Year-round schools, later start times, the four-day week, trimesters, and more!

Students may graduate at the end of the seventh term if they have completed all credit requirements and have passed both parts of the ISTEP+ Graduation Qualifying Exam. However, students who choose not to graduate in January of their senior year are required to attend school a full day during the eighth term. Modified schedules (less than a full day) are allowed only in very specific hardship cases as defined by state law. The student and a parent/guardian must meet with the student's counselor to complete the application for the modified schedule, and both the building principal and the Area Administrator must approve the application.

The Education of Exceptional Persons Program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. By completing all program requirements, students will be eligible to obtain a Pennsylvania teaching certificate in the area of Cognitive, Behavior, and Physical/Health Disabilities (CBPHD). The age range that is covered by this certificate is N-12 (i.e., nursery school age to high school graduation). In Pennsylvania teachers certified in this area typically teach in K-12 public schools, specially approved state schools for students with special needs, and/or early intervention classrooms. In K-12 schools this certification usually qualifies one to be titled a Learning Support Teacher, a Life Skills Teacher, an Emotional Support Teacher, or an Inclusion Specialist.

Programs DARE GREAT Police Explorers ... Police Reserves G.R.E.A.T. Program's Purpose G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education And Training) teaches students the dangers and consequences of gangs and gang like behavior. The G.R.E.A.T. program helps students set goals for themselves, resist pressures, resolve conflicts without violence, understand how gangs and youth violence impact the quality of their lives and the lives around them. G.R.E.A.T. is a 9-week course and (just like D.A.R.E.) is treated as an actual course such as History or Math. The course includes homework, group activities, and essays. Graduates of the G.R.E.A.T. program are awarded certificates to recognize their accomplishments. The certificates are presented during the New Haven Middle School Awards Ceremony held at the end of each school year. Focus The main focus of the G.R.E.A.T. program is for 7th Grade students. The G.R.E.A.T. Program also provides curriculums for the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th Grades. NHPD instructs the 7th Grade Curriculum at New Haven Middle School and the Allen County S.T.A.Y. Program (Alternative school for troubled youth). In 2002 the G.R.E.A.T. was expanded to include St. John's Middle School. The G.R.E.A.T. Officer spends 1 hour and 15 minutes in each class one day a week. Although New Haven currently has no reported gangs based in our city we have observed gang members visiting our community and associating with our youth.
