Indianapolis Public Schools, the state's largest school system, serves students within the old city boundaries. The remaining districts of Beech Grove, Decatur, Franklin, Lawrence, Perry, Pike, Speedway, Warren, Washington and Wayne serve the rest of the county. For a map of school district boundaries click here Most students in all 11 corporations are geographically assigned to a particular school. Within most districts, parents have some choice about where to send their children to school. These options are described in more detail below. Several of the corporations offer vocational training at the high school level, as well as alternative schooling options for students who are not succeeding in a traditional school setting. In addition, some schools (especially at the high school level) have more than one program of study from which students can choose. There are also several charter schools in operation in Marion County, with more scheduled to open in the coming years. Under recently passed federal legislation known as No Child Left Behind, if your child's geographically assigned school does not make adequate yearly progress for a certain number of years, he or she may be eligible to attend another higher performing school in your district. The Boone County Community Systemwide Response (CSR) Team is a community based initiative developed by the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service and the Indiana Juvenile Justice Institute. CSR has been established to help identify the problems facing our young people in the Boone County Community and to bring the community together to address and create solutions to these problems. As a result, not only is it our objective to reduce the number of juvenile cases referred to the court system of Boone County, but also to reduce the number of "at risk children" in our community.

Income may impact student assignments
Board member says shift would boost Jefferson test scores By Chris Kenning
ckenning@courier-journal.com

The Courier-Journal Roosevelt-Perry Elementary School near downtown Louisville has the greatest concentration of low-income students in Jefferson County, and its effects are hard to miss. Some incoming students lack basic reading skills, parental involvement is minimal, teacher turnover in some years has been high, and nearly half the school's students scored near the bottom on state tests last year. But if Jefferson County school board member Stephen Imhoff has his way, the district would disperse such high concentrations of poor and low-scoring students by busing them to middle-class schools. In more than 30 of the district's schools, low-income students constitute more than 70 percent of a school's student body. Imhoff will propose a plan next year to add income and ability to a formula that already considers race when determining where students go to school. It's an approach being tried in a handful of districts nationwide, and one that backers say boosts achievements of low-income students.

NWILink.com Search: Back to the Top By VICKI URBANIK The longstanding plan to move the Duneland School Corp.’s central administration offices out of the Brown Mansion and into Chesterton Middle School moved forward Tuesday, as part of a project that also creates an alternative school for troubled students. The Duneland School Board on Tuesday agreed to proceed with plans to renovate the unused part of CMS that used to be the old Central Elementary School. The walls in the northern section will be demolished on the interior, and the 13,000 square foot of space rebuilt to accommodate central administration offices, a school board meeting room, added storage and a new lobby. South of the existing courtyard, the current classrooms will be refurbished slightly to accommodate up to 40 alternative school students, who, because of disciplinary or other problems, have been removed from the regular school setting. The move means Duneland will break away from its arrangement with the Porter County Interlocal’s Alternative School in Valparaiso. Preliminary projections put the total cost at $989,000, said architect Bob Gerometta. The renovation should take no more than six months, he said.

Dr. John Huie, vice president of Purdue University, and Dr. Neil Theobald of the Indiana University Education Policy Center presented on the second panel. Their comments focused on the implications for eliminating property taxes as a revenue source for public education in Indiana. As co-chair of the Governor's Commission on Taxes, Dr. Huie began by describing the purpose and work of the Commission. The Commission is composed of representatives from every taxpaying group in the state, including farmers, realtors, citizens, schools, universities, towns, counties, and townships. Its number one priority is to explore substitute strategies to reduce the property tax. One approach is to target tax relief to population groups, such as low-income citizens, homeowners, or small business owners. A second approach is to shift certain funds away from property tax support to state support. Funds for consideration may be the general fund, city welfare, or others. Dr. Theobald
