Indian PM pleads for end to clashes
Activists burn an effigy representing Indian Home Minister L.K Advani and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. AHMEDABAD, India India's prime minister has appealed for an end to the worst religious bloodletting in a decade as he visited the riot-hit western state of Gujarat. Atal Behari Vajpayee on Thursday issued his strongest condemnation of the clashes that have killed more than 800 people, most of them Muslims, since late February. "This insanity cannot be allowed to continue," Vajpayee told an audience of thousands in a Muslim shrine turned into a relief camp in Ahmedabad, the state's main city. "The poison of religious violence must be stopped." Vajpayee's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been accused of not doing enough to stem the bloodshed and failing to uphold India's secular character. Vajpayee apologized to parliament on Wednesday, saying his party did not accept a dramatic offer he made to step down and that he reconsidered after the governing coalition asked him to stay on. Indian voters stream to the polls
An Indian soldier helps an elderly voter to a polling station LUCKNOW, India Indian voters have streamed to the polls in the first of four state elections. Polling began Wednesday in the northern state of Punjab, which borders Pakistan. Polling in populous Uttar Pradesh, the traditional heartland of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), starts on Thursday. The small hill state of Uttaranchal and the rebellion-torn northeastern state of Manipur are also due to vote in the elections which cover a population of more than 200 million. The polls are being held in stages to allow police to be moved around the country to prevent violence. Analysts see the elections as a test of the popularity of the national ruling coalition, during a period of increased military tensions with Pakistan.

Until the horse arrived in the late 1700s mobility was limited to walking and dugout canoes. With the horse many of the more eastern tribes adopted Plains Indian culture and even made long excursions to hunt buffalo. In 1805 -1806 the Lewis and Clark expedition obtained horses from some of these tribes, as well as provisions and the dugout canoes they used to travel down the Columbia River to the Pacific Coast.

Police: Two killed in Indian blast
Story Tools MUMBAI, India (CNN) Two people were killed and 15 others were wounded Monday in a blast in a crowded suburb of Mumbai, India, a police official said. The official said it was too soon to say whether the blast was an attack, but security has been tightened. Officials said the explosion took place at the rear of an empty city bus in Ghatkopar, an eastern suburb of Mumbai, previously known as Bombay. The casualties were bystanders, officials said, and the bus, which was close to a railway station, was destroyed in the blast. Such blasts in the teeming metropolitan area are rare. India has been concerned over recent attacks against Indian targets in the disputed territory of Kashmir. India's Jammu and Kashmir state is in the north of the country. Mumbai is on the western coast of India, toward the south along the Arabian Sea.

Email: mehlmadrona@aol.com Other Pages on Lewis Mehl-Madrona Summary : Increasingly, traditional Native American healing practices are being requested by Native Americans and non-Natives alike. A series of meetings among traditional Native American healers and the author resulted in a dialogue between the Native American world view and that of biomedicine. Recommendations arose for how treatment should proceed in the modern world and how best to introduce interested non-Natives to Native American healing practices. An approach was developed for bridging cultures to facilitate the interaction of non-Natives with traditional healers. One hundred sixteen patients were treated in this manner by the author in conjunction with traditional Native American healers. More than 80% of patients showed significant, persisting benefits of a time-intensive treatment program. A comparison group of patients derived from the author's emergency room patients showed significantly lower rates of improvement. The author suggests that an intensive treatment experience (inspired by Native American practices) over 7-10 days for treating chronic physical illness achieves both health benefits and improved cost utility.
