142. SALON Daily Clicks: Sneak Peeks
Brief Sneak Peek review of Alexie's book, indian Killer
http://www.salon.com/sneaks/sneakpeeks961003.html
INDIAN KILLER
By Sherman Alexie, Grove/Atlantic, 352 pages. Sherman Alexie is a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian who's received much deserved praise for his wry, taut, short story collection "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven," and for his blackly funny first novel "Reservation Blues." With the ambitious and provocative "Indian Killer," however, Alexie has arrived as one of the most potent new voices in American fiction. This multi-faceted tale is set in Seattle, a melting pot of Indians and whites, and the home of John Smith a tall, full-blooded Indian of an unknown tribe, raised by his loving white adoptive parents. A construction worker on "the last skyscraper in Seattle," John is a loner who hears voices, mainly that of his mentor, a Jesuit Indian who walked into the desert never to be seen again. Robert Spillman Robert Spillman writes for Details and The New York Times Book Review, among other publications. Sneak Peeks reviews forthcoming books. All titles may not be immediately available.

An article by Shailendra Bhandare on approaches to the classification of Archaic indian punch marked coins.
http://www215.pair.com/sacoins/public_html/shailenspaper.htm
THE ARCHAIC INDIAN PUNCH MARKED COINS - APPROACHES TO CLASSIFICATION Shailendra Bhandare I am attaching herewith one of my papers on PMCs that is unpublished – it was delivered at an ONS study in London day on 8 th May 1999. I am currently improving and expanding it and it will be eventually published in the journal South Asian Studies. I thought it would be worthwhile to put it through the group and invite comments if any. NOTE: MAY BE COPIED OR DOWNLOADED FOR PERSONAL REFERENCE ONLY! NOT FOR PUBLICATION OR REPRODUCTION! Introduction The word 'Archaic' has been used here to denote the series often known as the 'Janapada' series of Indian Punch-marked coins. Any discussion regarding the term can be dispensed with as researchers in this field are too familiar with it. The term broadly differentiates the known range of PMCs into two general classes. One of them is the more familiar class comprising of coins with five symbols punched upon them - the class that is widely known as the 'Imperial' or 'Magadhan' PMCs and is thought to have formed the currency of the Magadhan empire down to the Mauryam times. These coins as a class exhibit certain characteristics such as weight, fabric and the number of punches or symbols that remain constant and may not be used as effective classification parameters. Their findspots are widespread across the known extents of the Magadhan empire and as such it can be safely generalised that they formed a uniform currency which was most likely controlled by the Magadhan burocracy. These coins have been extensively studied by Gupta and Hardaker whose seminal monograph remains the best reference to access them academically.

Indian cricket in disarray
Swing and a miss Ganguly was dismissed for four against New Zealand in the third limited-overs cricket international at Jade Stadium Story Tools
CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (Reuters) With the World Cup just over a month away, India's cricketers are in disarray. New Zealand dismissed India's hapless batting line-up for 108 before winning their third one-day international by five wickets on Wednesday to take a 3-0 series lead. The home side, having skittled India in 41.1 overs on a bouncy pitch, took just 26.5 overs to wrap up their victory. The drop-in strip, however, will again invite scrutiny, with the top individual score of the match coming from Nathan Astle with a run-a-ball 32. India, whose top score came in the form of 22 extras, also made 108 in the first game of the seven-match series. Opener Astle, perhaps wary of the awkward surface, opted for attack, charging down the wicket to hit 22 off Javagal Srinath's third over before being caught in the deep off the same bowler as he tried to launch a delivery out of the ground.

Indian leader says he's ready for 'dialogue'
Musharraf, right, and Vajpayee met on the sidelines of the Nepal summit their first face-to-face meeting since December 13. NEW DELHI, India (CNN) After weeks of heated rhetoric, accusations and military posturing, Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee reached out to rival Pakistan on Sunday, saying his nation was ready for "dialogue" with its fellow nuclear power. "We are ready to discuss issues with Pakistan all issues, including Jammu and Kashmir," said Vajpayee in a brief appearance with British Prime Minister Tony Blair. "India stands for dialogue. We believe in an exchange of views. We believe in negotiations to solve problems." The comments came hours after Vajpayee shook hands but discussed little with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf at the end of the South Asian Regional Cooperation meeting in Kathmandu, Nepal. Tensions between the two countries have been high since gunmen attacked India's parliament December 13 an attack staged by terrorists supported by Pakistan, according to New Delhi officials.

Paleo-Indian Traditions
The Paleo-Indian period was the earliest firmly established era of human activity in the New World (10,000 - 8,000 B.C) and involved the spread of similar technologies and subsistence patterns in many parts of the continent. As elsewhere, it is represented in Manitoba by Clovis, Folsom, and Plano traditions and was dependent upon hunting of large game animals, originally extinct Pleistocene mammalian fauna and, later, the giant long-horned bison. This emphasis earned the first North Americans the title of "Big Game Hunters". Because much of Manitoba was covered by glacial ice and the meltwater which formed Lake Agassiz , Paleo-Indian sites are not abundant in the province. Points during the Clovis time, 10,000 - 9,000 B.C., are found in isolated occurrences west of the Manitoba Escarpment. During the Folsom phase (9,000 - 8,000 B.C.) Lake Agassiz dropped in elevation possibly allowing peoples to move into the Red River Plain. It rose again by 8,000 B.C. and began its final retreat approximately 700 years later. The end of this era is associated with the extinction of many big game species as the last Pleistocene ice age gave way to the modern climates of the Holocene.

    Indian beef protesters raid McDonald's
Bharatiya Janata Party activists protest in Bombay NEW DELHI, India McDonald's restaurants have faced the wrath of Hindu activists again over the use of beef flavoring in the chain's french fries in the United States. A Hindu nationalist group shouted slogans outside the corporate office of McDonald's in the Indian capital on Saturday, demanding the closure of all its outlets. More than 50 protesters belonging to the Shiv Sena, an alliance partner of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government, refused to accept the company's clarification that french fries and other vegetarian products sold in India "do not contain any beef or animal extracts, of whatsoever kind." In a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Vajpayee, Jaibhagwan Goyal, a local Shiv Sena leader, demanded that the government order immediate closure of all McDonald's restaurants in the country. Goyal was skeptical of the company's assurance, saying it had made similar promises in the United States 10 years ago, but continued to use beef flavoring in fries.
