Islamic and Later Indian Art Harvard's collection of Islamic and later Indian art is small but magnificent. It comprises a broad range of works, from Samanid pottery and Mamluk calligraphy to Qajar lacquers and Ottoman textiles. The department is particularly strong, however, in painting. Its masterpieces, which rank among the finest in the United States, include a group of miniatures from the extraordinary 14th-century Great Mongol ("Demotte") Shahnama, the Safavid master Mir Sayyid-'Ali's Night-time in a Palace, and the miniatures of the "pocket-size" Divan of Anvari produced for the Mughal emperor Akbar. The department also has one of the most important representations of Rajasthani painting in the world. The over 2,500 items in the collection include: Paintings and drawings from the Arab, Il Khanid, Timurid, Safavid, Qajar, Ottoman, Sultanate, Mughal, Deccani, Rajput, and British India periods; Illuminations; Calligraphy; Qur'ans and other manuscripts; Ceramics and tiles; Metalwork, including arms and armor; Textiles and rugs The collection is displayed in thematically-oriented exhibitions in the Islamic Gallery on the second floor of the Arthur M. Sackler Museum.

Native American Arts and Crafts
We get a fair amount of mail asking us to recommend websites where people can buy authentic American Indian arts and crafts. There are a lot of imitations of Native American artwork out there, and it can be hard to tell the wheat from the chaff. It doesn't help that most Native American artists don't have websites, whereas every marketer of Chinese-made dreamcatcher knockoffs has at least twenty different URLs trying to sell their stuff.
So if you're looking for arts and crafts that were actually made by Native Americans, either because it's important to you to have the real thing or because you want to support native people with your purchase, here is a list of some American Indian artists whose work is available online. This list is by no means completeplease email us if you have a website of Native American art (traditional, contemporary, or mixed) for us to add. We will gladly advertise any individual native artist or native-owned art business here free of charge. We do not link to arts or crafts which are not made by tribally recognized American Indian, Inuit, or First Nations artists, so please do not ask us to.

What Does this Indian Symbol Mean?
Decorative and symbolic, these designs are seen frequently
Visitors to the Southwest are often intrigued by the variety and aesthetic appeal of the design elements used in Native American arts and crafts. The designs on Indian pottery, weavings, baskets and silver and stone jewelry are so intricate and carefully constructed, it is inconceivable they are not configurations holding some deeper meaning, shaped from a forgotten age, relics of an arcane language, or symbols of some old and secret religion. In all cultures, symbols borrow from experience, vision, and religion and become individualized through the creative process of the artist/symbol-maker. The designs used in the Southwest are from varied sources and they have been adapted and used by divergent tribes. Some have sifted in slowly as different groups arrived bringing their own inventory of designs; others have arrived with new technologies; still others have origins and, therefore, meanings, that will never be deciphered. The designs may be decorative, symbolic or combinations of both. Meanings may change from tribe to tribe. In one location a symbol may have meaning and in an adjacent tribe be used entirely as a decorative element. In short, every variation is possible.

Each year the Santa Fe Indian Market includes 1,200 artists from about 100 tribes who show their work in over 600 booths. The event attracts an estimated 100,000 visitors to Santa Fe from all over the world. Buyers, collectors and gallery owners come to Indian Market to take advantage of the opportunity to buy directly from the artists. For many visitors, this is a rare opportunity to meet the artists and learn about contemporary Indian arts and cultures. Quality is the hallmark of the Santa Fe Indian Market. The planning process includes an experienced committee that screens artist entries for quality and authenticity. SWAIA also has art experts who conduct on-site inspections of all artist booths during Market to ensure that quality standards are maintained.

    THE HUICHOL INDIANS
These Indians live in the remote mountains of the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Because of their extreme remoteness they were untouched by the Spanish invaders. They still live an extremely magical life. Religion and art are inextricably intertwined in Huichol life; therefore their deities and ceremonies are incorporated into their art. Please note - this site contains high quality art graphics, and may take a few moments to download. Your patience will be rewarded!
Through their art, the Huichol's share with us segments of their traditions and mythology. Some of the deities most often portrayed are the Deer (god of fertility and the brother of the peyote); the Peyote (god of knowledge and the center of their religion); the Eagle (god of life); the Snake (used in prayers for rain); Flower motifs(often depicting the sacred peyote of the cornflower) and Scorpions (considered to be small messengers form the gods). The Huichol beliefs are complex and elaborate involving ritual prayer and ceremony. Therefore each piece of Huichol art in addition to being a beautiful work of art, carries it's own historical and spiritual significance.
