Indian plane hijacking a hoax
By Satinder Bindra CNN New Delhi NEW DELHI, India (CNN) - The reported hijacking of an Alliance Air Boeing 737 with 54 passengers on board turned out to be a false alarm, India's civil aviation minister said early Thursday. The incident was triggered by an anonymous phone call to ground controllers by someone reporting a hijacking. Staff alerted the pilot of the plane, who immediately took safety precautions, locking the cockpit door and landing at the nearest airport New Delhi, Civil Aviation Minister Shahnawaz Hussain said. "It was not a mock exercise or a planned exercise. We had assumed that the plane had been hijacked and the prime minister was also awake and was being informed," Hussain told reporters. The plane was on a domestic flight from Mumbai to New Dehli, and landed at 12:55 a.m. Thursday.

"For 500 generations they flourished until newcomers came... much was lost; much was devalued, but much was also hidden away in the hearts of the dispossessed...
...Their voices insist upon a hearing and the cumulative wisdom of their long residence in this land offers rich insights to those willing to listen. The challenge now is to find a way to make knowledge of the ancient traditions, the experience of change and the living reality accessible and available..."
excerpt from Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest: An Introduction by David M. Buerge We can learn from the images and writings of the time... This site provides an extensive digital collection of original photographs and documents about the Northwest Coast and Plateau Indian cultures, complemented by essays written by anthropologists, historians, and teachers about both particular tribes and cross-cultural topics. Information on the Guaran of eastern Paraguay. Includes photos.
http://www.paraty.com.br/iguarani.htm
Material cordially given ty the Centre of Indigonal Work and the Association Nhandeva
The traditional territory of the Guarani is located in the castern part of Paraguai, the mission region in Argentina, the northern part of Uruguai and in Brasil parts of Mato Grosso South and in southern and easthern regions.
In Brazil, from the fifties onwards, the Guarani were classified ethnic graphically in three groups: Kaiová, Xiripá, and Mmbyá
The Mbyá, now predominant in the sowthern States and along the coast of Brazil, have named themselves "Nhandeva", which means "Our people" or "the real Guarani person".
Besides the apparent tolerance and diplomacy of the Guarani we can add certain characteristics of systematic contact that produce, in this tribe, specific habits aiming at preserving their traditions and establishing relations with the dominant society.
The Guarani Mbyá, because of former intense contact characterized by cultural and fysical persecutions, developed variores mecanisms in order to maintain and live their cultural and religious traditions, guaranteeing the continuation of the tribe and ethniticity.
Their methods did not exclude an inevitable living together with the white people, with whom they always tried to maintain a friendly relation. The demonstration of respect towards foreign habits and religions, the way of clothing according to that of the people in the region, meant more than merely submission to a continous process of acculturation, namely a a strategy of autopreservation.
