How you can support this website!
Many Migwetches to Jonathan, who prefers that his last name not be used. This person, who is of Grand Portage Ojibwe heritage, had lost touch with his ancestral origins. He found some relevant info on this site, about Grand Portage and other Minnesota Ojibwe tribes and history that helped him and his kids get in touch with their Indian roots. He saw the problems I'd been having since the fire with hardware to replace not covered by insurance. So this man donated a 32 meg SIMM!!!! (computer memory). T hat's a really helpful kind of giveaway, an Indian tradition. As an individual, I cannot receive any funding. So I support this site (and the book reviews site) as best I can personally. Usually the only real heavy expense is phone. But losing a lot of equipment and software that has to be replaced is very hard. Help like this is really appreciated. It is so unusual I hardly know what to say except migwetch in every language, of which "Pidamaya!" "Thank-you!", "Merci beaucoup!" and "Dankeshoen" exhausts my linguistic knowledge. I was very happy to learn that materials gathered here either created locally or linked-to can help people to learn about their lost tribal heritage, and to find tribal contacts. Often I wonder if it is really of any use to anybody.

    THE DIFFERENT INDIAN ART SCHOOLS
The almost infinite styles of the Indian Miniature Artform are classified into various schools. The more prominent among them are the Jain paintings, Rajasthani, Mughal, and the Pahari schools. These are then further classified into the various other forms, such as the Basholi, Kangra, Kalighat and the Sikh styles.
    Jain Miniatures
These are manuscripts on paper about the lives of Mahavira, the founder of Jainism, and of other Jain saints. Of these, the Kalpasutra of Bhadrabahu is the most popular. The illustrations consist of lotuses and other flowers, animals, birds, and Jain ascetics, who believed in not hurting any living thing. These were mostly painted in Gujarat and the Rajputana area of Western India, around the 13th and 16th century. The same paintings are illustrated again and again - Mahavira as a child lying by his mother, Mahavira seated under a tree against a rocky landscape, Mahavira standing by while God Indra takes his royal robes and gives him monastic clothes. The drawing is angular, figures are shown in three-quarters profile, the noses are sharp, the fish eyes are ferocious. And one eye is extended in a peculiar way, like a 'further eye', jutting out of the profile.

As part of an initiative to present the ancient heritage of the people of Singapore, in 1994-95 the Government of Singapore held an exhibition Alamkara: 5000 Years of Indian Art, at the National Museum, Singapore. The exhibition was organized by Asian Civilizations Museum, National Heritage Board, Singapore and National Museum, New Delhi , and ran from July 1994 to January 1995. The Alamkara website, originally at http://www.ncb.gov.sg/nhb/alam/ (site no longer live) was hugely popular in the early days of the World-wide Web, but was taken down at the end of the exhibition. I thought it was a well developed online exhibition, and decided to resurrect it in February of 2002. However, I no longer had access to the original presentation or artifacts, and instead have used alternate works available to me from my father's Timeless Theater Picture archive. I have tried to be faithful to the spirit of the original exhibit, and have maintained the original commentary, including the foreword by Lim Chee Onn I have enhanced the presentation by including relevant pictures and annotations. I have also compiled a comprehensive list of references for students and researchers.
