Millions mourn India's Bandit Queen
Devi was shot three times in the head and twice in the body outside her home on July 25 By CNN's Nandini Kochar NEW DELHI, India Phoolan Devi, the Bandit Queen and member of parliament who was gunned down outside her home in New Delhi last week, is being mourned by millions across India. Many saw Phoolan Devi as a woman who was greatly wronged, a woman who fought back and a woman who reached the upper echelons of parliamentary democracy. She represented the aspirations of the lower classes. Phoolan Devi, who came to be known as the "Bandit Queen," lived the life of an outlaw for 4 years in the ravines of Central India. During her life as a gun-toting bandit she was charged with, but never convicted for the massacre of 22 upper-class men. Phoolan Devi claimed some of these men imprisoned her and repeatedly gang raped her. She always said she never killed anyone but was fighting against the oppression of upper classes. After spending 11 years in Jail, Phoolan Devi continued her fight for the lower classes as a Member of Parliament.

Minu Karmakar, right, wails as an unidentified relative, left, carries her dead child outside the B.C. Roy Memorial Child Hospital From CNN correspondent Satinder Bindra KOLKATA, India (CNN) An inquiry has been ordered after at least 15 children most between the ages of one and four died at a government-run hospital in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata. In a case that has sparked outrage across India, parents of the children are accusing the B.C. Roy Memorial Child Hospital in Kolkata of negligence and health officials concede conditions at the hospital are far from adequate. Grieving parents allege their babies were starved of bottled oxygen and died slowly. Most of the children who died in the past two days were suffering from respiratory problems, stomach ailments and meningitis. China, India strengthen trade ties
Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh meets with Chinese Vice Premier Qian Qichen From Lisa Rose Weaver CNN Correspondent BEIJING, China (CNN) Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh has ended a five-day visit to China with increased economic cooperation high on the agenda for improving bilateral ties between the two Asian giants. In a move aimed at softening their often strained political relations, the world's two most populous nations have agreed to a timeline for solving tensions that have been festering since they fought a brief border war 40 years ago. Two-way trade was high on the agenda, with China setting an ambitious goal of tripling bilateral trade with India to $10bn by the end of the year. Singh's visit, which began a day after direct commercial flights between India and China were launched Thursday, paves the way for Premier Zhu Rongji to travel to India later this year.

LUCKNOW, India (Reuters) A bitterly cold winter in northern India killed 43 people overnight, raising the toll from near-freezing temperatures sweeping the region since Christmas to 189, officials said on Thursday. Agra, the city of the Taj Mahal, and adjoining districts were the coldest, with heavy fog and an icy breeze during the day. The temperature dipped to three degrees Celsius (37 Farenheit) at night. Day temperatures were 10 degrees Celsius below normal in most parts of the Uttar Pradesh state, officials said. Weather officials said the cold snap would continue for another few days, putting at risk poor and homeless people, who depend on government agencies for relief. "The administration is doing its best to ensure whatever respite is possible within our means. Beyond that we have to depend on God's mercy," Ambika Chaudhary, revenue minister of Uttar Pradesh, told Reuters.
