Bush, Blair discuss India and Pakistan tensions
CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) President Bush, still on vacation at his Texas ranch, spoke with British Prime Minister Tony Blair Wednesday afternoon about the continued tensions between India and Pakistan. Scott McClellan, White House deputy press secretary, said the call was part of the "ongoing discussions about ways our two nations can work together to reduce tensions in the area." Bush and Blair also spoke about the prime minister's upcoming trip to the region, McClellan said. The two leaders last talked about the situation in Southeast Asia Saturday, when Bush also called Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. He encouraged the leaders to take steps to reduce tensions and pull back from the brink of war. The Bush administration voiced some optimism that this week's economic summit in Kathmandu, Nepal, might help ease tensions between the two nations. The session, which leaders of India and Pakistan are attending, could be help the nations "seek ways to make progress towards resolving their differences," McClellan said.

India and Pakistan
Since the founding of India and Pakistan as separate states in 1948, the dispute over who should control Kashmir has been one of the world's most enduring and violent conflicts. In 1999, the two states came close to war over a border incursion by Muslim partisans into the Kargil region which borders Kashmir in India. According to the Indian government those involved were trained in and backed by Pakistan.
In 1998, both India and Pakistan successfully test-exploded nuclear devices, leading many to fear a new arms race. India claims it needs nuclear weapons in case of possible future confrontations with China, with whom it fought a border war in the 1960s. There are also signs of a religious conflict at play, pitting predominantly Hindu India against Muslim Pakistan. The US led war against neighboring Afghanistan is raising concerns that the conflict may escalate tensions in Kashmir as skirmishes between Indian and Pakistani forces are regularly reported along the Line of Control.

Minister sees India train wreckage
An Indian Muslim family look for valuables in the wreckage of their home GODHRA, India (CNN) India's home minister L.K. Advani has visited the site of a train attack that sparked days of religious riots in Gujarat, blamed for more than 450 deaths. Advani stepped aboard the charred remains of a train coach, where 58 people died mostly Hindu activists when a mob of suspected Muslims firebombed the train Wednesday. Touring hospitals in the state's commercial capital Ahmedabad and visiting the injured, the minister promised the situation was now under control. "When a holocaust of this kind happens as it has over the past five days, obviously people will be scared and it is our job as the administration to reassure them," he said. Mobs of Hindus and Muslims laid siege to the state's commercial capital, Ahmedabad, and other parts of Gujarat, in violence sparked by the deadly train attack. About 3,000 soldiers are patrolling the streets of Gujarat to help police maintain order.

India-U.S. to hold first war games
The joint exercises signal an improvement in relations between the United States and India Staff and wires NEW DELHI, India India says it will hold its first joint army war games with the United States, in the latest sign the sometimes-frosty relations between the two are warming. Exercise Balance Iroquois, to be held in the northern Indian town of Agra this week, comes as India is involved in a tense military stand-off with nuclear neighbor Pakistan. America suspended military links with India and Pakistan after they carried out nuclear tests in 1998, but resumed ties after they threw their support behind U.S. forces fighting in Afghanistan. U.S. Special Forces, Indian army para-commandos and Hercules C-130 aircraft will take part in the exercise, officials said. "The aim of this exercise is training in airborne assault where para-jumping is involved. It's a follow up of our new relationship with the U.S. involving defense supplies, training and other areas," an Indian defense spokesman told Reuters news agency.
