India launches a powerful GSLV rocket toward space Space technology has allowed the nation of India to move into the world of high technology, a place previously occupied only by more-developed nations.
India has been up there since July 18, 1980, when it became the eighth to demonstrate it could send a satellite to orbit above Earth. India launched the satellite Rohini 1 on an Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV) rocket from the Sriharikota Island launch site.
Indian cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma spent eight days in 1984 aboard the USSR's space station Salyut 7.
In recent years, India has concentrated much of its space development work on complex applications satellites and more powerful rockets. The nation's two main interests are satellites for remote sensing and communications used for weather pictures, disaster warnings and feeds to 552 television and 164 radio stations on the ground.
Here's a partial chronology:
  • 1963 - The first sounding rocket was launched Nov. 21 from TERLS.

This point in particular, attracted many a foreign invaders to lay hands over this nation - known for her rich culture, wealth as well as tradition. India has always seen a variety of religions taking birth in different parts of the country an as a result, a natural tolerance grew for different groups following different religion types. However, as evil follows good, rifts took birth too. And one has been seeing bloodshed over matters of religious bias time and again. India has seen a variety of rulers including Persians, Greeks, Chinese nomads, Arabs, Portuguese, British and other raiders all of whom conquered over the local Hindu kingdoms who invariably survived their depradations, living out their own sagas of conquest and collapse. All the while, these local dynasties built upon the roots of a culture well established since the time of the first invaders, the Aryans. The discovery of India's most ancient civilization literally happened by accident. In the mid-1800's, British engineers who were busy constructing a railway line between Karachi and Punjab, found ancient, kiln-baked bricks along the path of the track. This discovery was however treated as a little more than curiosity unless archaeologists later revisited the site in the 1920's and determined that the bricks were over 5000 years old.

The Amritsar Massacre
From the Encyclopedia Brittanica
"Politically, as well as economically, the postwar years proved depressing to India's high expectations. After the was British officials, who in the first flush of patriotism had abandoned their ICS posts to rush to the front, returned to oust the Indian subordinates acting in their stead and carried on their prewar jobs as though nothing had changed in British India. Indian soldiers also returned from battlefronts to find that back at home they were no longer treated as invaluable allies but reverted immediately to the status of "natives." Most of the soldiers recruited during the war had come from Punjab, which, with only 7 percent of India's population, had supplied over 50 percent of the combatant troops shipped abroad. It is thus hardly surprising that the flash-point of postwar violence that shook India in the spring of 1919 was Punjab province. The actual issue that served to rally millions of Indians, arousing them to a new level of disaffection from British rule, was the government of India's hasty passage of the Rowlatt Acts early in 1919. These "black acts," as they came to be called, were peacetime extensions of the wartime emergency measures passed in 1915 and had been rammed through the Supreme Legislative Council over the unanimous opposition of its Indian members. On April 10, in Amritsar, Kichloo and Satyapal were arrested and deported from the district by deputy commisioner Miles Irving, and when their followers tried to march to Irving's bungalow in the camp to demand the release of their leaders they were fired upon by British troops. With several of their number killed and wounded, the enraged mob rioted through Amritsar's old city, burning British banks, murdering several Englishmen, and attacking two Englishwomen.

CHAPTER 6 JIHAD IN INDIA’S HISTORY The principles of jihAd elaborated in countless compendia composed by Islamic scholars, have been generalized from concrete practices of the Prophet, and confirmed by Allah through “revelations” in the Quran. In turn, these principles have guided all swordsmen of Islam throughout these fourteen countries and in many lands. India has had a prolonged experience of jihAd from the day when the first Muslim army stepped into Sindh in 712 CE and won its first victories after suffering a number of defeats for 78 years. Lands in Seistan, Khurasan, Transoxiana and Afghanistan where Hindu religion and culture had flourished for long, had been subjected to jihAd in earlier years. We are citing some of the prominent jihAds waged in India by the most famous mujAhids The citations that follow are from the well-known Muslim chronicles composed in medieval times. The only change we have made is to replace the word “God” by the word “Allah” in order to make the translation more faithful. God of the Pagan pantheon has nothing to do with Allah of the Quran, who is only a projection of the evil in man and his baser drives for self-aggrandisement, as is obvious from the deeds that Allah sanctions. MUHAMMAD BIN QASIM (712-15 CE) After Muhammad bin Qasim had reduced some forts in Sindh, he wrote to Hajjaj, his uncle and governor of Iraq: “The forts of Siwistan and Sisam have been already taken. The nephew of Dahir, his warriors, and principal officers have been despatched, and the infidels converted to Islam or destroyed. Instead of idol temples, mosques and other places of worship have been built, pulpits have been erected, the

CBSG India - a case study on 'regional network as conservation engineers by Sally Walker A case Study on Captive Breeding Programmes History CBSG India was convened in 1991 by Sally Walker under the auspices of Zoo Outreach Organisation. CBSG, India was initiated in 1991 following a comment of CBSG, SSC Chairman, U. S. Seal that regional meetings of CBSG would allow more grass roots participation. During a lecture on international cooperation in the Wildlife Institute of India Zoo Consultancy Project Zoo Management Course, it was clear that interest was high in zoo managers. Permission was sought from Dr. Seal and the first satellite CBSG was launched. Since that time CBSG "nodes" or national or regional networks have been started throughout the world with varying degrees of success. CBSG, India has been among the most active. For the most part CBSG, India functions through other networks and activities which have been organised under joint auspices of Zoo Outreach Organisation and CBSG, India, e.g. the Taxon and subject based networks (see Objective # 5), such as the invertebrate, amphibian, reptile, bat, education, networks, the CBSG process workshops (see Objective # 6), such as PHVAs (6), CAMPs (12), etc., by publishing a newsletter as well as appropriate articles in ZOOS' PRINT, and finally by collecting and linking individuals with a particular interest and expertise which may be useful to interactive management of captive and wild populations as members. Not all have been able to participate in either taxon networks or workshops but are "on call" in case some appropriate activity should emerge.

In India the first references to astronomy are to be found in the Rig Veda which is dated around 2000 B.C. Vedic Aryans in fact deified the Sun, Stars and Comets. Astronomy was then interwoven with astrology and since ancient times Indians have involved the planets (called Grahas) with the determination of human fortunes. The planets Shani, i.e. Saturn and Mangal i.e. Mars were considered inauspicious. Table of Contents Home Introduction Chapter 1: Production Technology and

Indian History Civilization
The roots of Indian civilization stretch back in time to pre-recorded history. The earliest human activity in the Indian sub-continent can be traced back to the Early, Middle and Late Stone Ages (400,000-200,000 BC). Implements from all three periods have been found from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Bihar, parts of what is now Pakistan and the southern most tip of the Indian Peninsula. The earliest known civilization in India, the starting point in its history, dates back to about 3000 BC. Discovered in the 1920s, it was thought to have been confined to the valley of the river Indus, hence the name given to it was Indus Valley civilization. This civilization was a highly developed urban one, and two of its towns, Mohenjodaro and Harappa, represent the high watermark of the settlements. The Archaeological e xcavations at Mohenjo-daro and Harappa reveal that the people lived in brick houses and had wells, bathrooms, drainage systems, and well-made household utensils and copper weapons

Photo: Rajendra Shaw/Oxfam Following independence India was divided up in a process called partition, to create Pakistan as a Muslim state. This was a difficult process; many millions of people had to travel between the new states, and in the unrest, people were killed. Mahatma Gandhi opposed partitition; he was assassinated by a Hindu fundamentalist. The dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir began at independence and has rumbled on ever since with periodic outbreaks of cross-border skirmishing. The potential dangers of conflict over Kashmir were underlined when both countries tested nuclear weapons within weeks of each other in May 1998 and for several months in 2002 there seemed to be a real risk of war.
