The Indus Valley civilization, India's earliest known civilization (2500-1700 BC), is identified by its interesting culture as well as its artifacts. The strength and basis of Hinduism is attributed to the Vedic culture (about 1500), as well as the origin of the caste system. India has had many different influences throughout its history due to the migration, invasion or expansion of other nations. Some of these nations or people who influenced India include the Mongols (under the direction of Genghis Khan), the Greeks (Alexander the Great), and the British. India was a wealthy country, economically and culturally up until British colonization. Europeans would trade with India for spices or cotton textiles, but when the British colonized the country the economy declined. This was due in part to exploitation and destruction of India's industries and wealth. Eventually, India would be granted its independence again in 1947, after which a slow progression has been seen in its development. More...

History
This compilation is dedicated to everyone who has made St. Stephen's College what it is today. As is evident from its size and content, this booklet is far from being a comprehensive history of the College. It attempts to evoke through vignettes the spirit of a renowned and distinguished institution. The compilers wish to thank, Mr Shankar Ghose, Mr Ranjit Bhatia, Dr Wilson, Mr Lawrence Paul, Dr Aditya Bhattacharjea, Mr Subarno Chatterjea, the computer lab assistants, the library staff, Arvind Ranganathan, Tarun Singh and Deepak Gehlaut(for trying to teach a novice to operate computers) and all the others for their encouragement and help. By the essential conditions of their life, by the circumstances of their history, by the continuity of their growth through political and religious revolutions, by the catholicity of sympathy in which they embrace every form of speculation and enquiry, by the happy discipline through which they combine reverence with freedom and enthusiasm with patience, the Universities are providentially fitted to train men who shall interpret the faith of the West to the East, and bring back to us new illustration of the one infinite and eternal Gospel.Nowhere does the spirit of England find a more complex expression, nowhere is it more easy, more natural to believe that the Mission of England will not be unaccomplished. 24. INDIA: History Writing Takes A Strong Hindu Turn By Ann Ninan July 1998

July 9, 1998 INDIA: History Writing Takes a Strong Hindu Turn
by Ann Ninan
NEW DELHI, Jul 9 (IPS) - For two hours on Monday, the serene Lodi Garden, a lush, landscaped park around medieval tombs here, was taken over by boisterous supporters of a right-wing Hindu organisation campaigning for a ''unified India''.
Some 1,000 invited guests were treated to mangoes and ice- cream, while the hosts, a branch of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), distributed maps of ''akhand Bharat'' (unified India), incorporating ''62 Hindu districts'' in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The raucous party loudspeakers blared patriotic songs set to pop tunes, a newspaper reported was held to celebrate the launch of plans to set up a 100-crore rupee (250,000 dollars) memorial to countless unsung martyrs in the ''Hindu districts''.
The earliest to lay down their lives, the group claims, were two sisters during an attack by Muslim invader Mohammed Bin Qasim in 712 A.D. The memorial will ensure Hindus remember their ''history and roots'', thinks Prem Sharma, former member of Parliament from Delhi of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Once again, history writing is the target of pro-Hindu groups like the VHP, BJP and the neo-fascist, cadre-based Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) which counts Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister Lal Kishan Advani among members.

The earliest human activity in the Indian sub-continent can be traced back to the early, middle and late Stone Ages (400,000-200,000 BC). [edit this] [Change image] [Upload image] The people of India have had a continuous civilization since 2500 B.C. when the inhabitants of the Indus River Valley developed an urban culture based on commerce and sustained by agricultural trade. This civilization declined around 1500 B.C. probably due to ecological changes. During the second millennium B.C. pastoral Aryan-speaking tribes migrated from the northwest into the subcontinent. As they settled in the middle Ganges River Valley they adapted to antecedent cultures. The political map of ancient and medieval India was made up of myriad kingdoms with fluctuating boundaries. In the 4th and 5th centuries A.D. northern India was unified under the Gupta Dynasty. During this period known as India's Golden Age Hindu culture and political administration reached new heights. Islam spread across the subcontinent over a period of 500 years. In the 10th and 11th centuries Turks and Afghans invaded India and established sultanates in Delhi. In the early 16th century descendants of Genghis Khan swept across the Khyber Pass and established the Mughal (Mogul) Dynasty which lasted for 200 years. From the 11th to the 15th centuries southern India was dominated by Hindu Chola and Vijayanagar Dynasties. During this time the two systemsthe prevailing Hindu and Muslimmingled leaving lasting cultural influences on each other.

Introduction
From the earliest settlements along the Indus River, the Dravidians and later the Aryans spread their settlements deep into the sub-continent. Protected by geographic barriers, the valley inhabitants had limited contact with the outside world. Farmers cultivated cotton and processed it into cloth which became a valuable trade commodity. Their cities were well planned with shops, granaries, extensive sewer systems and protective walls. Two major religions, Buddhism and Hinduism, developed in India and spread throughout Asia. Art served religion well in India. The artists of the area cut unique Buddhist Temples from rocky cliffs with facades and interiors intricately carved to imitate the wooden constructions of the period. From the earliest simple structures to the ornate and imposing later ones, the Hindu Temples must be appreciated as sculpture as well as architecture. Their paintings, particularly from the Gupta dynasty, are classed as some of the finest in history. Back to Top

(The World is one family - an ancient Vedic term) New Sections Added by Sudheer Birodkar Dear Visitor,
Here goes a Sloka (couplet) from the Atharva Veda (one of the 4 Vedas - treatises on knowledge from ancient India) which embodies the true spirit of humanness expressed, not today, but four thousand years ago. We are the birds of the same nest,
We may wear different skins,
We may speak different languages,
We may believe in different religions,
We may belong to different cultures,
Yet we share the same home - OUR EARTH. Born on the same planet
Covered by the same skies
Gazing at the same stars
Breathing the same air
We must learn to happily progress together
Or miserably perish together, For man can live individually, But can survive only collectively
It is this spirit of humanness that has been the undercurrent of existence in a part of the world known by many names like Aryavarta, Jambudwipa, Bharatvarsha, Hindustan or India. This spirit has also prevailed in many other parts of the world where the right thinking of humankind has prevailed. Shiva-Nataraja - the Indian God of Dance.

India's History India Homepage Adventure in India Asia Homepage The World History I ndia's extraordinary history is intimately tied to its geography. A meeting ground between the East and the West, it has always been an invader's paradise, while at the same time its natural isolation and magnetic religions allowed it to adapt to and absorb many of the peoples who penetrated its mountain passes. No matter how many Persians, Greeks, Chinese nomads, Arabs, Portuguese, British and other raiders had their way with the land, local Hindu kingdoms invariably survived their depradations, living out their own sagas of conquest and collapse. All the while, these local dynasties built upon the roots of a culture well established since the time of the first invaders, the Aryans. In short, India has always been simply too big, too complicated, and too culturally subtle to let any one empire dominate it for long. True to the haphazard ambiance of the country, the discovery of India's most ancient civilization literally happened by accident. British engineers in the mid-1800's, busy constructing a railway line between Karachi and Punjab, found ancient, kiln-baked bricks along the path of the track. This discovery was treated at the time as little more than a curiosity, but archaeologists later revisited the site in the 1920's and determined that the bricks were over 5000 years old. Soon afterward, two important cities were discovered: Harappa on the Ravi river, and Mohenjodaro on the Indus.
