The results highlight geography education gaps
If you are lost, don't ask a young person for directions - that is the message coming out of an international survey of 18-24 year olds conducted by America's National Geographic Society. More than 3,000 young adults in nine countries were tested on their geographical knowledge - with some alarming results. Countries tested Sweden Germany Italy France Japan Britain United States Canada Mexico Despite a deluge of news about the prospect of a war against Saddam Hussein, only 13% of Americans tested could point Iraq out on a map of the world. Perhaps even more worrying - when confronted with the same map, only 89% of Americans could find their own country! The surveyors asked the youngsters to answer 56 questions on geographic knowledge and current events.

Rajasaurus narmadensis , including a chart, illustration, and photos >> A new species of dinosaur was announced by Indian and American scientists today: a 30-foot (9-meter), horned carnivore that hunted other dinosaurs 65 million years ago. A reconstruction of the dinosaur's skull (see photo gallery ) may shed light on how the continents drifted into their present positions and what might have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Read the full Rajasaurus was stocky and around 30 feet (9 meters) long. Among the features that make the dinosaur a new species, paleontologist Jeff Wilson cites what may have been a small, rounded horn above its skull. Has Mysterious Killer of India's Vultures Been Found? John Roach
for National Geographic News
Updated May 4, 2004
When Lindsay Oaks went to Pakistan in the year 2000, there were so many vultures that he got bored looking at them. Now, three years later, the raptors are nearly gone. Within a few years, they may be extinct. The culprit appears to be a drug akin to aspirin and ibuprofen. In a study that sheds light on a decade-old mystery, Oaks, a veterinary microbiologist at Washington State University in Pullman, and colleagues link the vulture deaths to the recent and widespread use of diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that has become a popular treatment for ailing livestock throughout the Indian subcontinent. Read the full An immature Oriental white-backed vulture (left) and an adult one (right) pick at an animal carcass. A study headed by veterinary microbiologist Lindsay Oaks now suggests that the cause of many vulture deaths over the last several years in Pakistan, India, and Nepal could be a painkiller commonly fed to ailing livestock.
