Commercial links with Denmark can be traced back to the early 17 th century, when Denmark established trading posts at Tranquebar in Tamil Nadu and Serampore in West Bengal. These were sold to the British in the early 18 th century. After India’s Independence exports to Denmark began growing slowly but did not exceed US$ 100 million until 1994. After the onset of India’s liberalization programme in 1991, the bilateral trade began to diversify and Danish investments started trickling into India. Undoubtedly, the technologically advanced Scandinavian countries like Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland offer a great deal of potential for expansion and growth of India’s trade and investment, especially in areas like information technology and biotechnology.
Bilateral Trade India's bilateral trade with Denmark increased from DKK 2808.2 million in 2001-2002 to DKK 2883.0 million during 2002-2003, registering a marginal growth of about 2.7%. In the last financial year (April 2002 to March 2003) , exports from India constituted DKK 1,779 million, while imports from Denmark constituted DKK 1,104 million. The Balance of Trade has remained in India's favour since the mid-nineties, increasing from approximately DKK 475 million in 2000-2001 to DKK 675 million in FY 2002-03. JOINT PRESS STATEMENT
1. The ASEAN Economic Ministers and the Minister from India held their first consultation in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam on 15 September 2002. The consultation was co-chaired by H.E. Pehin Dato Abdul Rahman Taib, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Brunei Darussalam and H.E. Mr. Murasoli Maran, Minister of Commerce and Industry, India. 2. The Ministers exchanged views on broad aspects of the present global economic climate in general and recent developments in ASEAN and India in particular. They expressed satisfaction with the recent trends in ASEAN-India trade, which grew by 30% from US $ 7.6 billion in 1999 to US $ 9.88 billion in 2001. The Ministers underlined the importance of sustained regional economic cooperation as a means to promote trade and investment flows. 3. Minister Murasoli Maran stated that the Government of India had announced to the Indian Parliament in 2001 that it intended to reduce its peak tariffs rates to the East Asia tariff levels within 3 years. The ASEAN Economic Ministers welcomed the statement bearing in mind the gap between the average Indian tariff and ASEAN’s average tariff. The AEM also welcomed Minister Maran’s expression of intention of having a bilateral RTIA or FTA as a long-term goal of ASEAN-India economic relations.

This is over and above the growth rates of 5.7 percent and 8.4 percent for the first and second quarters, respectively. The cumulative average growth for April-December 2003, thus, works out to 8.2 percent, compared with 4.1 percent for the corresponding three quarters of the previous year. The 8.2 percent cumulative growth for April-December 2003 is also marginally higher than the 8.1 percent "advance estimate" for the 2003-04 fiscal as a whole, made by the Central Statistical Organization on Feb 9. "India is now on a high growth path and has achieved the ambition of being one of the fastest growing regions in the world," said Anand Mahindra the president of the industry lobby, Confederation of Indian Industry. While China's GDP grew 9.9 percent during the corresponding period, Argentina's grew 9.8 percent. But even as India's Bharatiya Janata Party led-government and its Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh said that India's current rate of economic growth is "gratifying", and that the spectacular growth rate, which is the highest published quarterly growth rate recorded by India, is solely a result of BJP's radical policies, the CSO-released figures have kicked off a fresh controversy. Many economists believe that in the run-up to the national elections in April/May, the BJP-led government announced an unusually high GDP growth much of which could be based on a slight sleight of hand with national statistics. "The statistical jugglery came almost as an encore to the ruling party's 'Vision' document released two days back which promised a double-digit GDP growth target for the nation," said a report in India's leading business paper The Economic Times.
