"The Way of the Sadhu"
Story by Jean-Philippe Soule Varanasi, the holiest Hindu city, is perpetually overflowing with Pilgrims. Varanasi was already thriving in 500 BC when Buddha came to Sarnath to give his first sermon making it sacred to Buddhists too. Indians believe that the Ganges, the sacred river that runs through Varanasi, has its source in the footprints of Shiva, and that bathing in the Ganges from one of its ghats –ritual stairways leading to the riverEcleanses all the sins. Visiting Varanasi at least once in a lifetime is every Indian’s goal, and dying there insures the greatest chance of moksha (release from the cycle of rebirth). Of all the cities devoted to Shiva, god of internal knowledge, Varanasi is nothing else than Kashi, the City of Divine Light. We originally came to Varanasi with the intent to stay three days. Three days became three weeks, and leaving wasn’t easy. More than the yoga classes that followed, I was fascinated by the human being I found in Swami Shiva Nand Jee. Our daily yoga, and breathing and meditation practices were always followed by long hours of discussions during which we shared our philosophy on life and forged a deep friendship. Under Swami’s guidance, we dove into a cultural world we never knew existed.

Cultural policy
The cultural policy of the Government of India has three major objectives:
  • Preserving the cultural heritage of India inculcating Indian art consciousness amongst Indians and promoting high standards in creative and performing arts.
edit
History
The most endearing aspects of Indian art and architecture prior to colonization has been the strong impact of religious and folk idioms and folk art on courtly art. Although folk art received little encouragement during the period of colonization, independence brought forward a renewed interest in folk paintings. edit
Traditions
Indians join their hands (palms together) and bow slightly in front of the other person, and say Namaste Sanskrit for "I bow unto you") or Namaskar (derived from Sanskrit for "salutations") or variants in other Indian languages. This custom comes from a Hindu understanding that each person is inherently divine, and for this reason many Indians will gently touch their hands to their forehead and then to their heart, indicating the third eye and heart.

F ew countries in the world have such an ancient and diverse culture as India's. Stretching back in an unbroken sweep over 5000 years, India's culture has been enriched by successive waves of migration which were absorbed into the Indian way of life. It is this variety which is a special hallmark of India. Its physical, religious and racial variety is as immense as its linguistic diversity. Underneath this diversity lies the continuity of Indian civilization and social structure from the very earliest times until the present day.
Modern India presents a picture of unity in diversity to which history provides no parallel. Here is a catalogue of everything Indian. Indian religions, festivals, rituals, artifacts, monuments, costumes, music and dance, language and literature. Come and discover a little more of India's culture by selecting any of these topics. India India will sideswipe you with its size, clamour and diversity - but if you enjoy delving into convoluted cosmologies and thrive on sensual overload, then India is one of the most intricate and rewarding dramas unfolding on earth, and you'll quickly develop an abiding passion for it. Nothing in the country is ever quite what you expect, and the only thing to expect is the unexpected, which comes in many forms and will always want to sit next to you. India is a litmus test for many travellers and some are only too happy to leave, while others stay for a lifetime.
Warning
Several Indian regions are prone to flashes of conflict. Spats over Jammu and Kashmir in particular periodically push India and Pakistan to the brink of war. Travel to these two troubled regions should not be undertaken without consular advice, if at all. Similarly, consular advice should be sought before travel to any area bordering Pakistan in Rajasthan, Punjab and Gunjarat. Although such advice helps in keeping abreast of the latest developments, bear in mind that terrorist attacks can occur without warning. Social tension also affects the Kulla region of Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and several states in north-east India: Assam, Nagaland, Tripura and Manipur. Other issues of concern for travellers include sexual harrassment of women and food and water hygiene, but the most common is petty theft and fraud.
