THEORY WORKSHOP HELMUT ZETTL Tiahuanaco and the Deluge Cradled in the basin of the Peruvian-Bolivian altiplano, the
Titicaca region is currently densely populated by the Aymara Indians,
who eke out an agricultural existence, subsisting primarily on maize,
frozen potatoes, and chicha, a fermented alcoholic beverage made of
cornmeal. But there is evidence that such was not always the case. Just 12 miles southward of the southernmost tip of Lake Titicaca lie the remains of Tiahuanaco, the site of a technologically advanced culture considered by many archaeologists (romantic not orthodox) to be the oldest ruins in the world. Although some misguided scholars have attributed the buildings of Tiahuanaco to the Incas, it has now been established that the city was already in ruins when the first Incas came upon the scene. In 1540 the Spanish chronicler, Pedro Cieza de Leon, visited the area and his description of the statues and monoliths compares very closely to what we see today. The site is at an altitude of 13,300 feet

Chapter 1: A History of Information Highways and Byways
Ancient Networks

pp. 2-7 The concept of networking to communicate and share information is neither new nor limited to computers. The earliest incentive to develop networks was the need to bridge distances and communicate beyond the line of sight. The need for a network system was primarily a military one. A well-known example is that of the Romans, who built some of the earliest networks, with a road system that facilitated not only the rapid movement of troops but also the rapid exchange of information by messengers. In short, the words networks and information are nearly synonymous and emphasize the value of the timely acquisition of information. One has only to look at the terms "network of spies," "network of informers," and "networking" to see this relationship. It is also implied in military terms such as "gathering intelligence" and "reconnaissance." The architecture of these early networksliterally the roads that were constructed and the relay systems that were developedis an evolutionary blueprint for the Internet and World Wide Web. The earliest information networks predate the Roman cursus publicus road network by hundreds of years. In Greece between 1300 and 1100 B.C. signal fires were used to flash signals from mountain peak to mountain peak.

Machu Picchu
A fortress city of the ancient Incas, in a high saddle between two peaks circa 50 miles (80 km) NW of Cuzco, Peru. The extraordinary pre-Columbian ruin, 5 sq. Miles (18 sq. Km.) of terraced stonework link by 3,000 steps; it was virtually intact when discovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911.
Machupijchu
prologue
"After almost four hours by train, on one of the most impressive and spectacular stretches in the world, from high, cold early morning plains down to lush vegetation in the frequently suffocating late morning heat, one arrives at the foot of the mountain Machupijchu. Then the eight kilometer road of thirteen zigzag hairpins in an acrobatic bus takes us up the mountain, and one arrives at the hotel. From here, it is only a few steps and the city opens itself. ..."
"To visit Machupijchu, you must prepare the soul, sharpen the senses. Forget for some minutes, the small and transcendental problems of our lives, of modern... man..."

    THE ORIGINS OF POTATOES
Peru's Inca Indians were the first to cultivate potatoes in about 200 B.C. The Incas had many uses for potatoes, which ranged in size from a small nut to an apple and in color from red and gold to blue and black. Raw slices were placed on broken bones, carried to prevent rheumatism and eaten with other foods to prevent indigestion. The Incas also used potatoes to measure time correlating units of time by how long it took potatoes to grow. The first potatoes arrived in North America in 1621 when Captain Nathanial Butler, then governor of Bermuda, sent two large cedar chests containing potatoes and other vegetables to Francis Wyatt, governor of Virginia at Jamestown. The first permanent North American potato patches were established in New England around 1719, most likely near Londonderry (now Derry), New Hampshire, by Scotch-Irish immigrants. OreIda
