Humans have probably lived in Peru for more than 13,000 years evolving at the same time as the ancient civilization of Egypt. Beginning about 1250 BC, several advanced cultures, such as the Chavin, Chimu, Nazca, and Tiahuanaco, developed in different parts of Peru; however, the area was not unified politically until AD 1438, when the Inca set out from their base in Cuzco on a career of conquest that, during the next 50 years, brought under their control the area of present-day Peru, Bolivia, northern Argentina, Chile, and Ecuador. Within this area, the Inca established a totalitarian state that enabled the tribal ruler and a small minority of nobles to dominate an inert population. Like the Aztec, the Inca came late upon the historical scene; even their legends do not predate AD 1200, with the first emperor. For, like Old World peoples, and unlike other aboriginal Americans, the Inca recounted their history by kingly reigns. Most of the accounts agree on 13 emperors (see Pre-Columbian Civilizations: The Inca). The first seven emperors were legendary, local, and of slight importance; their traditions are full of impossible or improbable events, especially those of the quasi-mythological founder, Manco Capac. In this period the Inca were a small tribe, one of many, whose domain did not extend many miles around their capital, Cuzco. They were almost constantly at war with neighbouring tribes. The incredibly rapid expansion of the Inca Empire began with Viracocha's son Pachacuti, one of the great conquerors, and one of the great men, in the history of the Americas. Also with his accession in 1438 reliable history began, almost all the chroniclers being in practical agreement. Pachacuti was called by the British geographer-historian Sir Clements Markham "the greatest man that the aboriginal race of America has produced." He and his son Topa Inca may be aptly compared to Philip and Alexander of Macedon. Pachacuti was evidently a great civic planner as well; tradition ascribes to him the city plan of Cuzco as well as the erection of many of the massive masonry buildings that still awe visitors to this ancient capital.

    THE MOON IN ANCIENT HISTORY
    (Ancient Astronmical Calendars)
Astronomical calendars have been in existence for thousands of years. For our ancient ancestor's time was measured by the number of Moons that had passed from a certain period, and by the shadows that the Sun and Moon cast.
There are "Man made" lunar calendars that some scientists place as old as 32,000 years. Some recent archeological findings are from the Ice Age where hunters carved notches and gouged holes into sticks, reindeer bones and the tusks of mammoths, depicting the days between each phase of the Moon. These artifacts are dated between 25,000 and 10,000 B.C. There are also surviving astronomical records inscribed on oracle bones dating back to the Shang dynasty of the fourteenth century B.C. that reveal a Chinese calendar, with intercalation of lunar months. The Sun, Moon, planets, and stars have provided us a reference for measuring the passage of time throughout history. All cultures before recorded history charted the heavenly skies to make some sort of sense out of their environment.
In Egypt, the paths of the stars were recorded as early as 6,000 years before Christ. The wisest of the Egyptians were the Hermetic philosophers, who possessed a profound knowledge of the sky. They relied upon the predictable motion of these bodies through the sky to determine the seasons, months, and years. People began a preoccupation with measuring and recording the passage of time. There was a need for planning and for divination and prognostication; to maintain these cycles meant that records needed to be kept and observatories needed to be built to precisely measure these cycles.

Incas Easier - Incas are a native South American people that once ruled one of the largest and richest empires in the Americas. Their empire covered much of present-day Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile and parts of Columbia and Argentina. The Inca empire was conquered by invading Spain in the 16th century. Harder - In the 12th century, conquering Inca tribes spread from the mountains of Peru into the fertile Cuzco valley. By the end of the 15th century, the Incas controlled a huge empire. They numbered more than 10 million people and covered 440,000 square miles (1,140,000 square kilometers). Incas won these lands with their powerful armies, then strictly controlled their people with efficient organization and communication. Incas constructed a paved road system, irrigation canals, and massive stone buildings and fortress temples. In 1532, the empire weakened by civil war and unrest was overwhelmed by a small force of Spanish solders.

Around the year 1200 A.D. my ancestors, the Incas, came down from high in the Andes mountains to conquer the scattered tribes throughout the South American continent. They imposed their rule, their highly organized form of government and their spirituality on the weaker, less organized people of what is now Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and parts of Chile and Argentina. Civilization in America: The Incas
The Incas began to expand their influence in the twelfth century and in the early sixteenth century, they exercised control over more territory than any other people had done in South American history. The empire consisted of over one million individuals, spanning a territory stretching from Ecuador to northern Chile.

HOME Machu Picchu Nazca and Paracas Lake Titicaca Peru LAND OF THE INCAS Peru in South America is a fascinating country. Geographically, Peru encompasses an arid coastal desert, the rugged snow-capped peaks of the Andes, and steamy rainforests that form part of the vast Amazon basin. Historically, the region has seen the development of cultures such as the Inca whose legacies remain to mystify travelers and archaeologists to this day. The Inca culture was the last to arise in Peru before the arrival of adventurers and plunderers from overseas... Rise and fall of the Incas In the fifteenth century, the Inca state began to expand under the rule of the emperor Pachacuti. Other cultures were conquered and assimilated to create the most powerful empire in the New World. At its peak the Inca empire stretched for 5500 kilometers from what is now southern Columbia down through Peru to central Chile. Many descendants of the Incas still live in the Peru highlands. The Incas built the staggering citadel of Machu Picchu in a dramatic mountain setting. Machu Picchu survives as the most famous legacy of the fated Inca empire.

A Quechua-speaking tribe which had a empire that stretched from the Pacific coast across the Andes to the Atlantic and from Ecuador 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers) southward to central Chile. The Incas conquered this vast territory in a single century, and ruled its people through a highly organized government. In their capital, at Cuzco in Peru, lived the emperor — called "The Inca" — who was regarded as a god on Earth. The nobles were a strong and gifted group. They developed among the people great skill in handicrafts, building, and architecture, and they accumulated fabulous wealth in gold and silver. They had no form of writing, but kept records by means of an intricate system of knotted cords called quipus . Despite the absence of the wheel, the Incas achieved a high level of civilization, with massive stone and adobe buildings and an extensive system of roads. But when the Spaniards arrived in 1532, the empire had been weakened by civil war (1525-1532) between Huascar and Atahualpa. Its fall to Pizarro and his handful of men is considered one of the tragedies of history. After a few disastrous rebellions, the spirit of the people was broken. Oppression continued through centuries. There are now estimated to be fewer than 3 million pure Incas. The ancient population is said to have been between 8 and 10 million.
