Dance develops both form and grace.
Apple Tree Theatre Company is the newest activity of the Performing Arts Workshop. Our first production, 'Finian's Rainbow", was seen by over 2,000 people and was well received in the community. Apple Tree's open auditions offer our students and others performance opportunities in a broader, more professional setting. Apple Tree Theatre Company provides quality family theatre for the entire community! The Performing Arts Workshop staff serves as a resource personnel in the arts to local community groups, park districts, and school systems, presenting in-service consultation and workshop programs for teachers and students. We also serve as a consulting theatrical production team and can provide original scripts, music, choreography, musical arrangements or staging assistance for community theatre and school musical productions. Students come to us for a variety of reasons . . . Some wish to become the "triple threat" of the theatre: one who has mastered all the skills—acting, singing and dancing! Some want simply to gain the confidence to participate in various projects with their peers, while others want to be in a creative and spontaneous activity that is fun!

Chair, ADJUNCT ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR JAMES THURSTON
Adjunct Professor Tina Wentzel Associate Professor Joylynn Wing; Adjunct Associate Professors Richard Sewell and Thurston Technical Director John Ervin; Visiting Guest Artist Pamela Scofield (Costume Design) The primary mission of performing arts at Colby is to promote the historical, theoretical, and experiential study of the performing arts as a viable and important area of inquiry for all liberal arts students. Performing Arts offers a major and minor in theater and dance. The department is founded on two premises: first, that performance is essential to a full understanding of the art form; second, that all the arts share significant modes of thought and expression and that a knowledge of one art form will contribute to an understanding of all the arts. In addition to traditional lecture and discussion courses, the program of study includes frequent opportunities for practical experience in the theater. The department also seeks to educate the larger community through its rigorous production schedule of plays, dance concerts, touring artists, and residency workshops with guest artists. Consistent with the College's mission, the major in performing arts is a liberal arts, not a pre-professional, major. It is, however, a major that will adequately prepare particularly interested and talented students for graduate study and further involvement with performing groups. It is a structured major, ensuring that all students have experience and training in acting, directing, movement, design, and technical production in addition to historical and theoretical study of theater and dance. The major is designed to encourage interdisciplinary study through elective courses in art, music, and dramatic literature.

Jason Grossman
Baruch College Performing Arts Certificate Program Jason Grossman
is an actor, director, producer and teacher. He is now the Program Coordinator for the Baruch College Performing Arts Certificate Program. Jason filed his cyberspace interview Wednesday, April 16, 2003. For information about Jason and the program visit http://www.funnysheesh.com You are involved with the new Baruch College CAPS Performing Arts Certificate Program. Could you tell us in what capacity you are involved and how you became involved with this new program? I am the Program Coordinator for the new Performing Arts Certificate Program. This means that in addition to teaching a number of courses, I'm responsible for promoting/marketing the program, running open houses, interviewing and recruiting faculty, reviewing course content of the courses in the program, observing the classes and helping to develop new courses. After taking some courses at Baruch College Continuing and Professional Studies six years ago, I began teaching a course which I had developed called "The Art of Socializing and Networking." Over the years, the course has been quite successful, combining my teaching, hosting and improvising backgrounds. Last year, I was approached by the Director of Baruch College CAPS, Dr. Abraham Tawil, to start this Performing Arts program. A program of this nature has never been offered before at Baruch. Sharon Fogarty of the Sharon Fogarty Performance Theatre with whom I've worked extensively over the past eight years was very supportive and encouraged me to take it on (with her great help). So the whole thing really came out of, well, 'socializing and networking.'

Amazon.co.uk Reviews The Way of Improv Longform improv is a bit like a spiritual practice. It's a very subtle and Zen-like process, it's so highly intuitive that it often seems psychic, it involves peak experiences of expanded awareness, and so on. It's the closest thing there is to magic (short of putting together flat-packed furniture). This book is the only one which teaches you how to do it, because all the others are about short-form improv games. It's written by the people who created longform improv as we know it (including Del Close, who is commonly regarded as something of a Yoda in the improv world). The book oozes wisdom. And it's not just one of the best improv manuals around, although there are some mighty fine ones (like Johnstone's Impro and Impro For Storytellers, and Viola Spolin's books). It's also a fabulous book for writing plays, sitcoms, sketches, all sorts.

Don't think that Theatre Arts are only for people who would like to make a career out of acting. They offer many more skills than that, the most obvious benefit of course is the increased confidence in self-expression which will be of great help in all kinds of oral presentations and speeches, debates and when you have to go for a job interview.
Even if you're planning a job in business, marketing, or advertising, Theatre Arts can improve your chances of success by strengthening your communication and persuasive skills.
Taking an elective in this department is also a lot of fun. Everyone talks about the wonderful family feeling of belonging to a Drama group, the level of trust and sharing quite unlike any other subject. Students at the end of a semester are often sad that the group will be breaking up, it's enabled them to form so many friendships (especially with people from other grade/year levels).
