Syllabus
Images Course Content and Approach ART 222 is concerned with critically encountering art in the later nineteenth century in Europe (c. 1860s-1900). Artists, critics, and art historians have defined this period and place in terms of imbricated styles and movements: Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, Symbolism, Aestheticism, Art Nouveau. As we examine artistic production in this period, one of our goals will be to deconstruct these labels in order to identify and investigate the complexities of artistic conditions and social-political circumstances to which these labels refer. On a day-to-day basis, we will be exploring the complex field of interpretation in the visual arts, with an emphasis on testing different critical strategies (by critical I mean strategies which are both theoretically informed and historically grounded). We will do this by combining intensive looking with discussion of some of the significant accounts critics and historians have proposed and debated.
Our daily practice will be informed by several overarching themes or propositions, such as:

Post-Impressionism
Post-Impressionism was a diverse art movement that engulfed the European art community in the latter part of the 19th century. Post-Impressionism constitutes a continuation of the Impressionist effort to portray painting in a differential and unbridled manner. The paramount figures to emerge in the movement include: Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Signac, Georges Seraut, Paul Gauguin, and Pierre Bonnard. The Post-Impressionists each developed individual styles that supported, or eroded the fabricated principles of the Impressionist movement. Post-Impressionism emerged in 1886 with the official cessation of the Impressionist movement. Before the movement’s decline, the Impressionists had successfully conquered a generation of skeptical critics. Although the movement lasted less than a decade, the Impressionist school had indirectly challenged and inspired their successors (the Post-Impressionists) to venture into new artistic expression similar to the way they had.

Post-Impressionism, a term coined in England by Roger Fry to describe the artists exhibiting in an exhibition in the Grafton Galleries in 1910; they included Cezanne, Derain, Matisse, Picasso, Roualt, Seurat and Van Gogh. We will however study the three main artists of this movement who are Cezanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh. The term does not imply any similarity of style, although it is true that all these artists reacted against the Impressionist preoccupation with visual appearances. The emphasis now lay in expressing an idea rather than rendering appearances. The movement developed from the 1880's onwards.
Paul Cezanne
Born Aix-en-Provence, France 1839, died 1906.
He studied in the same school as Emile Zola and they formed a close friendship which had a decisive effect on the course of Cezanne's life. With Zola, he became involved in the revolutionary creative ferment directed against the bourgeoisie and academism. He worked with his friend Camille Pisarro, taking part in the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, but after 1877, he refused to exhibit much again and retired to the south of France.
Cezanne's development can be divided into a number of phases. From1862 to 1870, he studied the painting of Courbet, Poussin and Manet among others, striving for a realism. His painting at the time was coarse in texture and often painted with a palette knife, using greys, browns, earth colours and heavy black shadows with the occasional flashes of brilliant colour. Characteristic of this period is a portrait of his father in 1866, called "Still life with black clock."

Post-Impressionism is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of artists who were influenced by Impressionism but took their art in different directions.
There is no single well-defined style of Post-Impressionism, but in general it is less casual and more emotionally charged than Impressionist work.
The classic Post-Impressionists are Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Henri Rousseau. The Pointillists and Les Nabis are also generally counted among the Post-Impressionists.
