Post-Impressionism is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of artists who were influenced by Impressionism but took their art in different directions.
There is no single well-defined style of Post-Impressionism, but in general it is less casual and more emotionally charged than Impressionist work.
The classic Post-Impressionists are Paul Cezanne Paul Gauguin Vincent van Gogh Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Henri Rousseau . The Pointillists and Les Nabis are also generally counted among the Post-Impressionists.

Post-Impressionism
Post-Impressionism was a diverse art movement that engulfed the European art community in the latter part of the 19th century. Post-Impressionism constitutes a continuation of the Impressionist effort to portray painting in a differential and unbridled manner. The paramount figures to emerge in the movement include: Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Signac, Georges Seurat, Paul Gauguin, and Pierre Bonnard. The Post-Impressionists each developed individual styles that supported, or eroded the fabricated principles of the Impressionist movement. History Post-Impressionism emerged in 1886 with the official cessation of the Impressionist movement. Before the movement's decline, the Impressionists had successfully conquered a generation of skeptical critics. Although the movement lasted less than a decade, the Impressionist school had indirectly challenged and inspired their successors (the Post-Impressionists) to venture into new artistic expression similar to the way they had. 1886, with the final decline of the Impressionists, the Post-Impressionists surfaced as the primary art movement in Paris. When they emerged however, they did not support the Impressionists naturalistic form as the Impressionists may have wanted, but the Post-Impressionists ironically rejected their teachings in the same way that the Impressionist had done. The Impressionists had unknowingly passed the same rebellious quality that had made their movement a success.

http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/p/postimp.html
P ost-Impressionism or post-impressionism - In early Modernism , a French art movement that immediately followed Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism . The artists involved, usually meaning (French, 1839-1906), Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890), Paul Gauguin (French, 1848-1903), and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901) showed a greater concern for expression structure and form than did the Impressionist artists. Building on the works of the Neo-Impressionists, these artists rejected the emphasis the Impressionists put on naturalism and the depiction of fleeting effects of light The term was coined by the British art critic and painter, Roger Fry (1866-1934), on the occasion of an exhibit of works by these artists, which he curated in 1910 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Other artists who were involved in this movement during a portion of their careers were Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954), Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) and George Braque (French, 1882-1963).

Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in The Art Institute of Chicago
Selected by James N. Wood View the Table of Contents The Art Institute of Chicago's collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art is one of the finest in the world, embracing the stylistic and thematic variety of these modern movements. This book presents full-color reproductions of 150 oil paintings, watercolors, prints, drawings, and sculptures. Ranging from early seascapes painted in the open air by the young Claude Monet, which marked the initiation of Impressionism, to the great Neo-Impressionist masterpiece by Georges Seurat, , that signaled its eclipse, and also including the eclectic works of the Post-Impressionists, who questioned their predecessors' reliance on external reality and introduced subjectivity and symbolism into their art, Impressionism and Post-Impressionism in The Art Institute of Chicago provides a visual record of much-loved works, and also expands preconceived notions of what Impressionism is.

In the late 19th century, the Impressionists defied academic tradition in French art with their emphasis on modern subjects, sketchlike technique, and practice of painting in the open air with pure, high-keyed color. In the wake of the Impressionist revolution, a new generation of Post-Impressionists pushed the basic pictorial components of color, line, and composition into new psychological and formal territories, influencing many abstract artists of the early 20th century. Thanks to such pioneering donors as Mrs. Potter Palmer and Frederic Clay Bartlett , The Art Institute of Chicago houses one of the largest and most significant collections of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art in the world.

Post-Impressionism
(starts 1880s)
The years between 1880 and the outbreak of WW II testified to a fruitfulness of different styles and artistic movements in Western Europe. These various tendencies, often consciously at odds with one another, are traditionally grouped under a common label, modernism.
Post-Impressionism is a French art movement in early Modernism, also known as Synthetism. It is almost absurd to call it Post-Impressionism for two reasons: because it diverged so strongly away from its predecessors - Impressionists , with all the admiration and due respect paid, and because "Post-Impressionism" started in early '80s while impressionism was still gaining speed. One could argue it hardly is a movement, keeping in one's mind all the diversity and brightness of artistic individuality it embraced. Struggle to regain solidity of color and form unites it more than anything, that's where the Synthetism as a name comes in. These artists showed a greater concern for expression, structure and form than did the Impressionist artists. Timeline is roughly end of 19th century. It introduced components that would have significant and lasting impact on modern art overall - primitivism and folklore notes with elements of mysticism. Light is as strong and as present as impressionist, but focused, not dispersed or broken into base colors. Palette of colors is purified and intensified.
