44. Department Of Cell Biology, Yale University
Offers graduate and medical students comprehensive training in neurobiology, developmental biology, infectious disease biology, molecular biology of nucleic acids, immunology, glycobiology, molecular biology and molecular medicine.
http://info.med.yale.edu/cellbio/
O ver its brief 30-year history, cell biology has matured into a vigorous, and rapidly expanding discipline. Today, it forms an essential bridge between important basic fields such as biochemistry, developmental biology, physiology, neurobiology, molecular genetics, immunobiology and microbiology. Since cell biology focuses on the functions of cells in diverse contexts, it also provides a natural connection between basic biological research and medicine. C ell Biology's range of interest is exceedingly broad, extending from general issues such as the biogenesis of cellular membranes, the properties of the extracellular matrix, the dynamics of the cytoskeleton, the interactions between the nucleus and cytosol, and the cellular basis of tissue function, to quite detailed questions of molecular function and recognition. True to the interdisciplinary origins of the field, cell biologists tend to rely on a wide spectrum of methodological and conceptual approaches. Currently, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and a variety of morphological tools feature prominently among them. The style of working is more problem than methods-oriented. A typical cell biologist is a hypothesis-driven experimentalist. T he Department of Cell Biology at Yale Medical School has, since its inception in 1974, been exceptionally active and well-recognized both in education and in research. While the main research focus has centered around cellular membranes and their functions, the department also has major activities in neurobiology, developmental biology, infectious disease biology, molecular biology of nucleic acids, immunology, glycobiology, molecular biology and molecular medicine. By pooling together the broad expertise available at Yale with the specific strengths of its own faculty, the Department offers graduate and medical students

48. The Brisbane Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Research Centre
Research in epidemiology, genetics, immunology, DNA and their impact on gastrointestinal disorders. Identifies IBD patient clinics, and related links.
http://www.medicine.uq.edu.au/IBD/index.htm
The Brisbane Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Research Centre seeks out key issues related to understanding and treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) by assembling, supporting and managing teams to advance knowledge in epidemiology, genetics, immunology and pharmacokinetics. Our aim is to be recognised both in Australia and internationally for basic and clinical research in gut immunology, colonic microbial ecology, IBD (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, indeterminate colitis) and other immune based gastrointestinal disorders. We run specialised IBD clinics and have active research programs in IBD epidemiology, genetics, immunology, microbiology and pharmacokinetics. Go to other pages on our site if you want more details. IMMUNOLOGY Faculty Research Interests. The Section of Immunobiology has a long tradition of interdisciplinary training in immunology. Pre- and post-doctoral trainees can receive research training in a combination of laboratories, allowing them to acquire a unique range of technical skills and concepts to be applied to a focused problem. In addition, trainees receive formal course work, attend seminars at which the research of outside experts or fellow trainees is presented and critiqued, and are free to exploit the considerable intellectual resources at Yale University. Each student selects his/her course of research and study in consultation with a mentor and a committee of advisors. Predoctoral training in Immunobiology leads to a Ph.D. degree and is designed to train individuals to perform independent research. For more information, see the home page for the Immunology Graduate Program. A wide variety of shared facilities are located within the Section: Facilities Available Cell Sorter Facility
In TAC 613 are 5 user-operated analyzers (4 BD FACSCaliburs and 1 BD FACScan). The Caliburs can analyze up to 4 colors with 488 nm and 633 nm excitation lasers while the FACScan can analyze 3 colors from a single 488 nm laser. Plans are in place to install sometime in spring of 2004 a multicolor analyzer which can do up to 14 colors from 4 lasers with a digital acquisition and analysis system. Also some of our machines are equipped with the FACSFlow fluidics stabilization system and the FACSLoader for automatic processing of samples. Machines are checked daily for optimal performance and Geoff Lyon is available during working hours to troubleshoot and can arrange training by appointment. Internet sign up for analysis time is available from any computer via the internet at

Immunology All research activities of the Section of Immunology are housed in the Yale Child Health Research Center, a $3 million facility that was renovated by the Department three years ago. Members of the faculty of the Section are included on training grants from the section of infectious diseases (Pediatrics), the section of allergy and clinical immunology (Medicine), the section of Immunobiology, and the program of Microbial Pathogenesis (MBB). Research funding within the Section totals approximately $950,000 in TDC per year, exclusive of the $1 million Pediatric Scientist Development Program. Given its research strengths, over the past 12 months the Section has continued to advance its clinical agenda by increasing outpatient visits by approximately 40%. With some administrative support and minimal nursing support, the section has achieved the best patient satisfaction survey results of all the pediatric
medical subspecialties. A new liaison with the Yale Health Plan promises to augment extramural support for a faculty salary and to increase referrals to members of the division.
