The activities of the Laboratory Experimental and Computational Biology (LECB) fall into several broad areas: macromolecular structure and function; membrane structure and function; immunology; phamacokinetics and computational and modeling methodology. The work is both theoretical and experimental. Application of theoretical understanding to these biological systems is accomplished through the use of advanced computing. Many of the theoretical studies are possible only through use of the supercomputing facilities at the Advanced Biomedical Computing Center, FCRDC, which was created and sponsored through the initiative of the Laboratory of Experimental and Computational Biology. The Laboratory oversees the development and operation of the contractor-operated The ABCC which serves as the only public-domain supercomputing center dedicated to biomedical research in the world. Access is provided to suitable applicants from the biomedical community, on the basic of scientific priority as evaluated by a time allocation group made up of representatives from the NCI, other NIH Institutes, and the extramural community. The goal is to provide access for challenging computational biology problems to proven, easy-to-use, fast, reliable, efficient, high-performance computers. The computing environment is centered around MIMD supercomputers and scalar parallel machines. A fiber optic network interconnects these platforms, and provides Internet access and high speed connections to a userbase of more than 1600 researchers.

    54. Department Of Cell Biology, Yale University
Offers graduate and medical students comprehensive training in neurobiology, developmental biology, infectious disease biology, molecular biology of nucleic acids, immunology, glycobiology, molecular biology and molecular medicine.
    http://info.med.yale.edu/cellbio/
O ver its brief 30-year history, cell biology has matured into a vigorous, and rapidly expanding discipline. Today, it forms an essential bridge between important basic fields such as biochemistry, developmental biology, physiology, neurobiology, molecular genetics, immunobiology and microbiology. Since cell biology focuses on the functions of cells in diverse contexts, it also provides a natural connection between basic biological research and medicine. C ell Biology's range of interest is exceedingly broad, extending from general issues such as the biogenesis of cellular membranes, the properties of the extracellular matrix, the dynamics of the cytoskeleton, the interactions between the nucleus and cytosol, and the cellular basis of tissue function, to quite detailed questions of molecular function and recognition. True to the interdisciplinary origins of the field, cell biologists tend to rely on a wide spectrum of methodological and conceptual approaches. Currently, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and a variety of morphological tools feature prominently among them. The style of working is more problem than methods-oriented. A typical cell biologist is a hypothesis-driven experimentalist. T he Department of Cell Biology at Yale Medical School has, since its inception in 1974, been exceptionally active and well-recognized both in education and in research. While the main research focus has centered around cellular membranes and their functions, the department also has major activities in neurobiology, developmental biology, infectious disease biology, molecular biology of nucleic acids, immunology, glycobiology, molecular biology and molecular medicine. By pooling together the broad expertise available at Yale with the specific strengths of its own faculty, the Department offers graduate and medical students

Building on the existing strong programs in Immunology, Microbiology and Vaccine Biology at the University of Rochester, the Center for Vaccine Biology and Immunology focusses on basic research into immunological mechanisms, and also on the long-term goal of helping to design the next generation of vaccines. The Center occupies 31,500 square feet of research space on the top floor of the recently (1999) constructed Kornberg Medical Research Building at the University of Rochester Medical Center. In addition, faculty throughout the Medical Center, including those in the new research building, share state-of-the-art core facilities which are housed in the new research building and elsewhere. Selected Programs which interact extensively with the Center include the following:
