Immigration Issues
Pressure To Involve The Government In Settling Immigrants
The nation's 31 million Hispanics are no longer confined to magnet cities such as Los Angeles and border states such as Texas and California. Over the past two decades, they have been moving into small towns from Arkansas to Nevada and North Carolina to Iowa. They have reportedly been received with varying degrees of welcome. In many towns, their arrival has strained local governments trying to serve long-time residents, and now an influx of newcomers.
  • In Detroit, where the Hispanic population has doubled over the past decade, the police department has had to struggle to find Spanish-speaking officers.
  • In western North Carolina's Buncombe County, the Hispanic population boom has spawned a growing need for bilingual workers.
  • The school district serving Las Vegas has been overwhelmed by 60,000 Hispanic students representing 31 percent of the student body half of whom don't speak English.
  • Longtime residents of Siler City, N.C., blamed an influx of immigrants for job losses and higher housing costs.
Lobbying groups representing Hispanic immigrants have begun pushing for federal assistance to help them get settled.

U.S. Legislative Issues
Congressman Tom Tancredo challenges Congress
U.S. House of Representatives - June 9, 2003 - In a stunning Special Order speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Tom Tancredo challenged the Congress to introduce a bill to open U.S. borders to anyone and everyone. He will vote against it, but there should be a public vote on what Congress is doing to our nation. Listen to this great speech! (See complete transcript Congressman Tom Tancredo introduces immigration moratorium bill Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO) introduced a bill in February, 2003 to reduce legal immigration from over one million a year to approximately 300,000 per year for five years. H.R. 946, the Mass Immigration Reduction Act of 2003, would enact a five-year moratorium on many categories of immigration, including extended adult relatives, and would significantly decrease the number of skilled workers and refugees. It also would eliminate the visa waiver program. As a comprehensive bill, it will also increase pressure against illegal alien amnesty bills now working their way through Congress. This bill deserves your full support. See the article

Like a once rich but now sadly befuddled uncle bent on gaining popularity through blatant cash handouts, even as those around him giggle at his foolishness, the United States has embarrassed itself again through badly misguided "generosity" to citizens of foreign countries. In an effort to make nice with the Mexican governmentand pander to Hispanic voting blocs in 2004the current Administration devised one of its worst plans yet: Social Security and disability benefits for illegal aliens. That's right, non-citizens who have gotten hold of false Social Security numbers and only worked here for a short time may now receive checks from the US government for the rest of their lives. And their families can continue to receive benefits even after they die. You'd think our international "kick me" sign was prominent enough, readable in flashing neon lights by now, and posted in every language. But the Federal Government isn't satisfied with the estimated 8 to 11 million illegal aliens already residing here and costing American taxpayers billions, and wants to invite even more foreign nationals to take advantage of us in new ways.

A recently drafted a treaty between the United States and Mexico would give the Mexican government at least $345 billion in Social Security payments for Mexicans who have worked here both legally and illegally. Eager to supply this stupidity with a benign sounding name, the government says the giveaway is being made possible under a new concept called "totalization." The idea is that people who have worked in more than one country can now combine their retirement benefits regardless of where they retire.

Immigration More than 1,200 people, mainly non-U.S. nationals of South Asian or Middle Eastern origin, were taken into custody during investigations into the Sept. 11 attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center. Civil rights advocates expressed concern at the unprecedented levels of secrecy surrounding the detentions and at reports that some people were denied prompt access to attorneys and relatives during the initial stages of detention.
The U.S. government was able to round up many people through immigration "sweeps" of people who have overstayed their visas, called the Absconder Apprehension Initiative. While technically the government has always had the power to exercise the rule, it had been loosely applied until Sept. 11, 2001.
The U.S. has also become stricter in issuing visas to tourists, business travelers and foreign students. Some foreign students who have been attending U.S. colleges attempted to renew their visa but were denied or the process has taken so long that they have missed the start of the academic year. The government is also requiring colleges and universities to give more detailed information on all foreign students, such as any dependents and contact information for graduates who have been granted a one-year practical training visa extension.

Report on the Conditions of Immigrant Women Five Years After the Beijing Conference Executive Summary
Hands that Shape the World finds that immigrant women are among the most vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and human rights violations in the U.S. Assessing the state of immigrant women in the five years since the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, this unprecedented review of conditions for immigrant women finds that the U.S. government has not only failed to protect the rights of immigrant women, but has implemented new legislation negatively impacting the well-being, health, employment, and family life of immigrant women. Hands that Shape the World, first released as part of a U.S. immigrant women's delegation to the "Beijing + 5" activities in New York City in June 2000, is an important contribution to the process of assessing progress on the Platform for Action set at the 1995 conference. Although the Beijing Conference made important strides in promoting international standards for women's rights, the particular challenges facing migrant women continue to be ignored, both at the United Nations level and by the U.S. government. The report urges the U.S. government to include immigrant women, including the undocumented, within its commitment to expand the rights and opportunities for all women in the U.S.

Edwards supports reform of current immigration policy to create “a clear road map to legalization and citizenship for undocumented immigrants who work hard and follow the law.” He supports increased security on the U.S./Mexico border to protect against illegal immigration. He supports an earned legalization program to help working immigrants gain citizenship more quickly.
    John Kerry
Kerry supports reform of current immigration policy. He supports efforts to restore benefits to legal immigrants and legislation for undocumented young people have grown up and graduated from high school in the U.S. He believes the naturalization process for legal permanent residents serving in the Armed Forces should be expedited. Kerry supports a proposal that will allow undocumented immigrants to legalize their status if they have been in the United States for a certain amount of time, have been working, and can pass a background check. He also calls for increased funding for border enforcement to ensure that only legal immigrants can enter the country.

    http://www.plainfield.k12.in.us/hschool/webq/webq10/migrate.htm
IMMIGRATION TO AMERICA INTRODUCTION: For immigrants in the early 20th century, the route between homelands in Europe and Asia and new homes in the United States was not always direct. One reason for this was that the United States government required newcomers to pass through immigration stations before they were permitted to enter this country. The two major stations were located near the places where most immigrants arrived in this countryNew York City on the Atlantic coast and San Francisco on the Pacific. The Ellis Island station in Upper New York Bay opened in 1892. An immigration station on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay opened in 1910. During the first 25 years of the 1900's federal immigration officials at Ellis Island handled more than twelve million immigrants. Most of these immigrants came from Southern and Eastern Europe. The Angel Island station served mostly Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino immigrants. TASKS: 1. You will be experiencing how your ancestors felt when they decided to emigrate to this country and face its challenges and opportunities. You will be assigned a role of an immigrant or an immigrant processor in a simulation on immigration issues. If your assigned role is an immigrant, you will be provided with an ID tag , an immigration checklist , and a loyalty oath . The other roles assigned will be that of a processor or official, interpreter/guide, doctor or judge. An appropriate approach to these roles would be to recognized that these offiicials were proud of their jobs and liked helping new immigrants enter the United States as they themselves or their ancestors had entered. However, these people were also human. Many did not accept some groups they considered "inferior" or whose customs and religious faiths differed from their own. Prejudices sometimes would cause unfair treatment of certain immigrants. This is to be kept in mind when interpreting the role you have been assigned.

    2. Government regulation of its own language use, including steps to facilitate clear communication, train and recruit personnel, guarantee due process, foster political participation, and provide access to public services, proceedings, and documents.
Strictly speaking, the United States has never had a language policy consciously planned and national in scope. It has had language policies The U.S. government spends, by rough estimate, more than $1.5 billion each year to support various forms of language education. Unfortunately no one can say whether these funds are well allocated or what overriding goals they serve. Such programs often work at cross purposes. For example, over the past three decades the U.S. Department of Education has poured billions of dollars into bilingual education,
