By now you have a pretty good idea about a career path, but where do you go to achieve that career goal? There a thousands of schools in the United States that offer thousands of career choices. It's up to you to investigate all your choices. Do you want to live outside Illinois? Do you need to work full time while you attend school? Would you be most comfortable on a large campus or small one? Live at home or in a dorm? There are three major categories of schools: 4-year colleges, community colleges, trade schools. Investigate which may be perfect for you!
4-Year College/University This is a really big category. It includes all the 4-year colleges that you've heard about such as Harvard and Stanford and a lot you may not have heard about. These colleges and universities come in all sizes - Generally they are divided into State run universities and private colleges. So, it is good to explore both choices even though one may cost more, they may also more financial aid to offset those costs.

The School The Philip J. Rock School is a year-round residential program which offers an extended day educational program. Some of the classes are housed in local public schools, during regular school hours. Our students join classmates for many activities in the school day, including art, music, physical education and vocational experiences. The PRC curriculum is based on the domain system to increase functional skills in these areas:
  • vocational
  • domestic/personal care
  • leisure
  • community Students have opportunities to develop work skills at various vocational sites in the community, as well as vocational opportunities in the school building. All students have a vocational component in their educational program. The combination of hearing and vision loss presents a significant and primary deficit in language skills. Therefore, total communication is utilized within the program. This method is combined with tactile signing to meet the needs of students without sight. Some students utilize a non-symbolic communication system or an adaptive communication device developed to compensate for physical impairments. Therapy services are an integral part of the educational program. Specialists in communication, occupational and physical therapy, and behavior management provide consultation and direct services in the classroom and community.

EARLY ADOLESCENTS AND THE WORLD OF WORK
A crucial factor in the formation of vocational identity is self-esteem. McDonald and Jessell (1992) found that those seventh and eighth graders who believed a variety of careers were possible for themselves had high self-esteem, could assess complex career information, and were primarily female, of middle to high socioeconomic status, and from two-parent families. Although boys thought most jobs were appropriate for either sex, 75% were unwilling to make nontraditional choices for themselves (ibid.). Although females appear more open to nontraditional careers at this age, middle school girls begin to feel the effects of gender bias on their aspirations (Silverman and Pritchard 1994). These findings suggest that middle school students need to learn to think about the future; recognize their responsibility for educational planning; broaden their aspirations beyond the stereotypes of gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic level; develop and maintain self-esteem; develop cognitive complexity (essential for the knowledge work of the future); have parental support for career choices; understand how school relates to future life roles; and recognize the broad scope of work in the 21st century.
