Email: mmanos@bradley.edu Mary Manos wears several hats in the Department of Teacher Education. First, she is the director of the Bradley University Institute for Gifted and Talented Youth. In that position, she designs, staffs, and implements Super Saturdays, the World of Wonder Summer programs, the Viva Le Arts for Gifted Students program, a Home School/Bradley University connection, and teacher preparation in gifted education. As the Golden Apple Scholar liaison at Bradley, Professor Manos advises the Golden Apple scholarship recipients as they work toward Illinois teacher certification. She also designs and implements study abroad offerings for the January Interim in London, England, and works with our placement office to place student teachers in London. Last but certainly not least, she teaches several courses in the teacher preparation program, specializing in the middle-school teacher certification areas. She also teaches the initial teacher education course for freshmen. Her responsibilities at Bradley allow her to interact with all class levels of teacher education majors, from freshmen to graduate students. She believes that every great teacher changes your life, and strives to present excellence in teaching.

Alternative Routes to Public School Certification All states require teachers to have some form of certification before they are hired. In Massachusetts , as in an increasing number of states, this is called provisional certification because public school teachers are regularly required to renew their certification. In Massachusetts and many other states, graduates who have not completed a standard program may submit a portfolio to the Department of Education requesting provisional certification. Massachusetts Regulations provide for a Certification Review Panel which offers an alternative route to certification for candidates appearing to meet standards through experience and formal education, but not meeting all requirements specified in the Regulations. Other states have similar programs. Also, in many states there are serious teacher shortages which compel school districts to hire teachers who have not completed any of the usual certification requirements. Such teachers are generally given something called either "emergency" or "temporary" certification, and often they are required to take some courses to begin a program in teaching while they are teaching fulltime. A number of states have programs in place to enable people with only a BA to obtain teaching jobs while pursuing their provisional certification (e.g.

The following initial teacher certification programs offered at NIU are listed by type of certificate. The name of the program and academic department administering the program is listed.
