September/October 2001 Misuse of the word ‘technology’ in schools by Halil I. Avci Halil I. Avci is manager of the radiological health risk section, Environmental Assessment Division, Argonne National Laboratory, and a school board member in Darien School District 61 in Darien, Illinois. Since becoming a school board member nearly two years ago, I have noticed that in primary and secondary schools, the word "technology" is often used to mean the use of computers in education and school administration. This over-generalization without regard to the true meaning of the word "technology" is not only inappropriate for schools, but is also likely to hurt students' chances to excel in engineering and technology fields when they enter college. The situation can be rectified with simple modification to school curricula and by using more appropriate terminology to designate school programs and courses that relate to technology and computers. The Webster's Dictionary (1994 Edition) defines technology as "the application of scientific knowledge to serve man in industry, commerce, medicine and other fields." The American Heritage College Dictionary (1997 Edition) defines it as "(a) the application of science, especially as it relates to industrial and commercial objectives, (b) the scientific method and material used to achieve a commercial or industrial objective."

State Regulation of Private Schools - June 2000
Illinois
Registration/Licensing/Accreditation: There is no general requirement in Illinois that non-public schools register with, be licensed by, or be accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education, although certain non-public school facilities need to be approved to serve public school special education students. However, non-public schools have the option of applying for registration and recognition on a voluntary basis. A school is registered when it has filed with the Board a "Nonpublic School Registration, Enrollment, and Staff Report" furnishing such evidence as required to assure compliance with federal and state laws regarding health examination and immunization, attendance, length of term, nondiscrimination, and applicable fire and health safety requirements. Minimum requirements for the recognition of nonpublic schools cover the organization, administration, instructional programs, instructional programs, extra-classroom activities, pupil services, school facilities, and personnel. Safeguarding Children
School Violence Tipline When our children are at school, we assume and hope that they are in a safe environment. However, we know that violence in schools has become a serious problem. The best way to prevent this type of violence is to empower students who are usually the first to hear about impending violence at school. While the best way to prevent violence is to inform a trusted adult, students can report threats of violence anonymously to the statewide, toll-free School Violence Tipline. Promoting the tipline is a collaborative effort of the Office of the Attorney General, the Illinois State Police, and the Illinois Parent Teacher Association. The tipline is answered by members of the Illinois State Police. Additional support is provided by the Springfield Mental Health Center. If you think someone is planning a violent attack at your school, please call the School Violence Tipline at 1-800-477-0024. May/June 2004 'Watch lists' to profiles: How Illinois reviews school district finance by Brad Colwell Brad Colwell is an associate professor, Department of Education Administration and Higher Education, and director of graduate studies at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. It is that time of year again - time when the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) announces the financial condition of the 893 local school districts in Illinois. Still commonly referred to as the "Financial Watch List," the system of financial accountability that started in 1981 has evolved, and in 2002 ISBE adopted a new system of financial accountability - the Financial Profile System. Reviewing the evolution of the Financial Watch system and exploring the new Financial Profile System will help school board members and superintendents know how these lists are generated and what each designation means. History of financial review Currently, the state has a two-tiered approach to monitor the financial condition of local Illinois school districts: the Financial Profile System and the more serious process of certifying a district to be "in financial difficulty" pursuant to Article 1A-8 of the School Code. However, it has not always been that way. A brief review of the origin of the state's involvement is helpful to clarify how Illinois derived its present system of financial oversight.
