Sea Grant Develops Teaching Tool on Nonindigenous Species in the Great Lakes Region
CHAMPAIGN, IL: Whether they are called "exotics" or "nonindigenous species," zebra mussels have created problems in the Great Lakes since the late 1980s. In response to this serious threat to the Great Lakes ecosystem, Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant has developed Zebra Mussel Mania Traveling Trunk, a teaching tool to help teachers incorporate nonindigenous species information into current curriculums. Drawing on its science-based research, Sea Grant joined forces with the Illinois Rivers Project. Robert Williams, director of the Illinois Rivers Project, incorporated elementary teacher input to develop this teaching tool, assuring its "teacher-friendly" design. Teachers may borrow a traveling trunk from lending centers located throughout the country. The trunk contains resources for experiments and other hands-on activities to teach about problems associated with aquatic nuisance species in the Great Lakes and inland waterways. Zebra mussel shells, videos, worksheets, posters and tests are examples of the included materials. A curriculum guide and resource portfolio enhance learning potential. The guide and portfolio may be purchased for $35 each. The entire traveling trunk is an excellent teaching resource for schools and school districts to have on hand permanently and may be purchased for $380. Lending sites include Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant, Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Indianapolis Zoo, Cincinnati Zoo and a number of other educational sites.

    INTRODUCTION
Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of
the relationship between quality library media programs and academic
achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between
1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number
of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement. METHODOLOGY Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP).

    Hosty v. Carter:
The Latest Battle for College Press Freedom
© 2004 Student Press Law Center An 11-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit heard arguments on Jan. 8, 2004, in a case that could determine whether college student journalists will be entitled to the strong First Amendment protection courts across the country have given them for the past 35 years. A decision is expected within six months The case, Hosty v. Carter , pits student editors at Governors State University in Illinois against school administrators and the Illinois Attorney General's office, who have argued that the students' First Amendment rights were no greater than those of teenagers in high school. See our news stories, below. The Facts: Governors State University was sued by student journalists Margaret Hosty, Jeni Porche and Steven Barba in January 2001 after Dean Patricia Carter told the newspaper's printer in October 2000 to hold future issues until a school official had given approval to the student newspaper's contents. The paper, the Innovator , had published news stories and editorials critical of the administration. Carter's directive was issued despite a university policy that said the student newspaper staff "will determine content and format of their respective publications without censorship or advance approval."

      by Kathy Branaugh
Mission Statement The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The mission is accomplished by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats; providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing and using information and ideas; and working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students. (Information Power, p. 1) This is the mission statement that I gave my administration when asked what is the purpose of the library. I needed this statement to show my administrators why the library is such an important part of the school. We as library media specialists are not people who just sit and check out books. Though we may not deal with students seven or eight periods a day, we do have many "chores" to do. When school started last year, I went in to visit my new principal. She told me that I was the third administrator of the school. I finally found someone who realized the work it takes to run a library media center. The administrative functions of the school library are often done behind-the-scenes but are essential to the operation of the library. The library must serve teachers and students to its fullest and it is your responsibility to make that happen. There are communities where the school library is the only library in town. Are you prepared to serve the community as well as the school?
