Spotlights University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign 1. Digital Imaging and Media Technology Initiative The primary mission of DIMTI is to advise and assist the Library and campus community in developing best practices for the digitization of collections. Digitization involves the creation of high-quality images through scanning, digital photography, or some other process. These images then can be posted on the Internet or saved in an electronic database for viewing by multiple users. By reducing wear and tear on fragile items, digital images help preserve original source materials. Recent DIMTI projects can be viewed online at http://images.library.uiuc.edu/projects/ 2. Preservation and Conservation Program Collection repair and maintenance of the Library's circulating and special collections is completed by several cooperating units within the program. The program primarily operates through a single workflow. All units send damaged items to Preservation and Conservation for repair. Items are evaluated for treatment. The book repair and conservation units perform collections conservation and simple book repair on those requiring such treatment and oversee in-house pamphlet binding. Damaged circulating items requiring rebinding are sent to the bindery at this point. Unbound serials and many new paperback acquisitions are routed separately through the Bindery Preparations Unit.
