In some towns, you have to drive for hours to take a peaceful walk in the woods or experience the serenity of an afternoon lolling on a riverbank, but in Oregon, Illinois, you are only minutes away from picturesque landscapes, verdant forests, rocky cliffs, and the meandering Rock River. Terrain The Rock River begins in southern Wisconsin and flows south through Rockford, meandering west through Oregon, passing by Grand Detour and ending in the Quad Cities area where it empties into the Mississippi River. The Rock River boasts some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the state. Along its banks lies some of Oregon's popular natural attractions and recreation areas including Lowden State Park , filled with deep, dark forests, and Lowden-Miller State Forest , 2,225 acres offering hiking, backpacking, birding, hunting and cross-country skiing, and Castle Rock State Park , with trails to the "top of the rocks." Castle Rock, named for its large outcropping of sandstone, is one of the few places in Illinois where the sandstone is exposed at the surface. A diversity of natural environments is found here including ravines, upland and floodplain forests, prairie, streams, and sandstone outcrops.

Teaching and research interests My research over the past two decades has been concerned with the internal changes in US cities, especially in the changes that occur in response to residential mobility and migration. I have conducted both micro scale and individual studies of tenure choice, and large scale studies of demographic change in the neighborhoods of large metropolitan areas. The latter studies examine the nature of the population flows between cities and suburbs, white flight and the impact of legal intervention on the urban mosaic. I have also been particularly concerned about the relative roles of residential preferences and housing affordability in the way in which segregation has emerged in metropolitan areas. I am currently investigating the interaction of class, race and geography in metropolitan areas, as well as continuing my studies of international migration.

Illinois State Police GIS
Works on Many Levels
By Monica Pratt, ArcUser Editor

It's no accident that traffic fatalities have declined in Cook County since 1996. GIS has helped the Illinois State Police (ISP) Department pursue a vigorous enforcement program that reduced traffic fatalities 42 percent during its first year in operation. The Department found GIS a powerful tool for managing and using data and has employed a many-faceted approach for implementing GIS use throughout the organization.
"This information is helping our Chicago district office and our patrol sectors get a better idea of when they need to have their manpower available and where the problem areas are," says Bitner. Map-based traffic information has been both effective and popular. Using maps helps target patrol assignments and make the best use of resources. GIS Customized by District Mapping for the Masses The Internet offered a less costly and labor intensive way to distribute some types of data to the public and the Department. The Illinois State Police Interactive Crime and Crash Mapping Daily and Monthly Fatality Reports Web site, part of the general ISP Web site, has been up since August 1999. The site uses MapObjects and MapObjects Internet Map Server technology to let visitors access traffic data that is updated daily.

Hotels in Illinois Addison Du Quoin Litchfield Prospect Heights ... Pontoon Beach Illinois - Geography Midwestern state in the N central United States. It is bordered by Lake Michigan and Indiana (E); Kentucky, across the Ohio R. (SE); Missouri and Iowa, across the Mississippi R. (W); and Wisconsin (N). The broad level lands that gave Illinois the nickname Prairie State were fashioned by late Cenozoic glaciation, which leveled rugged ridges and filled valleys over the northern and central parts of the state. The fertile prairies are drained by more than 275 rivers, most of which flow to the Mississippi-Ohio system; the Illinois is the largest river in the state. These rivers provided early explorers a way SW from Lake Michigan into the interior of the continent and later, in the days of canal building, played a big part in hastening settlement of the prairies. The completion of the Erie Canal linked Illinois, through the Great Lakes, to the eastern seaboard of the United States. The Illinois Waterway links Chicago to the Mississippi basin as the old Chicago and Illinois and Michigan canals once did, and the St. Lawrence Seaway provides access for oceangoing vessels. The waterways are but a part of a transportation complex that includes railroads, airlines (Chicago's O'hare airport is one of the busiest in the world), and an extensive modern highway system.
