For what geographic areas does the Census Bureau produce estimates?
The Census Bureau produces population estimates for the Nation, the States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, counties and equivalents, incorporated places, minor civil divisions, consolidated cities, census regions and divisions, and metropolitan areas.
Census Regions and Divisions
Counties (and equivalents)
Minor Civil Divisions
Legally defined county subdivisions are referred to as minor civil divisions (MCDs.) MCDs are the primary divisions of a county. They comprise both governmentally functioning entities that is, those with elected officials who provide services and raise revenues and nonfunctioning entities that exist primarily for administrative purposes, such as election districts. Twenty-eight states and Puerto Rico have MCDs. However, the MCDs function as general purpose governmental units in all or part of only twenty states. Within these twenty states, PEP produces estimates for all governmentally functioning MCDs and for nonfunctioning MCDs in counties that contain at least one functioning MCD. The legal powers and functions of MCDs vary from state to state. Most of the MCDs in twelve states (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin) serve as general-purpose local governments. In the remaining eight states for which PEP produces MCD level estimates (Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota) the MCDs, for the most part, perform less of a governmental role and are less well known locally, even though they are active governmental units.

Where The Action Is About Local Schools About Local Communities Things To Do For Families ... Home Geography 101: Understanding and enjoying SW Illinois is enhanced with just a little geography: The whole St. Louis area is built on a strata of bedrock that generally slopes to the east. This means that Missouri has a lot more outcroppings than Illinois, but there are gorgeous limestone cliffs (outcroppings) above Alton on the north, and in below Columbia on the south. (These should be on your "things to do" list as they make great day-tours. The "Great River Road", from Alton North, is on the American Heritage list.) But opposite the major part St. Louis city is a large old flood plain of the Mississippi called "The Great American Bottoms". Now don't panic yet....because the last time it was flooded was in the Great Flood of 1903, long before levees protected it. It wasn't anything but damp during the great flood of 1993, although flood plains along the mississippi near Alton and near Columbia were flooded in 1993. (But we won't take you anywhere there's the chance of flooding, and the Corps of Engineers probably won't let you anyway because of new regulations.) That old, flat flood plain, The American Bottoms, is not a hospitable residential venue. Although there are some towns and cities located on it, near the river, they're not considered top relocation sites, are generally shrinking in population, and we don't work there.

The maps were produced from the U.S. Census Bureau's Tiger/Line Files and Summary Tape Files with Sammamish DataSystems' GeoSight FactFinder Professional software (version 4.3B). Most of the maps are choropleth maps: maps in which polygons (e.g., tracts) are divided into distinctly colored or shaded classes. In any choropleth map, the selection of class intervals, colors, and patterns can affect the map's message. The fertile prairies are drained by more than 275 rivers, most of which flow to the Mississippi-Ohio system; the Illinois is the largest river in the state. These rivers provided early explorers a way SW from Lake Michigan into the interior of the continent and later, in the days of canal building, played a big part in hastening settlement of the prairies. The completion of the Erie Canal linked Illinois, through the Great Lakes, to the eastern seaboard of the United States. The Illinois Waterway links Chicago to the Mississippi basin as the old Chicago and Illinois and Michigan canals once did, and the St. Lawrence Seaway provides access for oceangoing vessels. The waterways are but a part of a transportation complex that includes railroads, airlines (Chicago's O'Hare airport is one of the busiest in the world), and an extensive modern highway system. The state's climate is continental, with extreme seasonal variations of temperature in parts of the state. Among Illinois's many tourist attractions are Shawnee National Forest, with recreational facilities; the Cahokia Mounds; and many state parks and historical sites, including New Salem and Lincoln's home and burial place in Springfield. An additional summer attraction is the Illinois State Fair.

Legend (Instructions on How to Read This Place)
As all maps are unreadable without a legend, I offer you mine at the beginning. This essay will chart the geography of Urbana-Champaign from a hybrid point of view: considering it from the vantage point of the local African-American community (or perhaps, more accurately, a point of view sympathetic to that community, of which I cannot claim to be a part) and at the same time from my own point of view as a white graduate student trying to make sense of this place. By looking at the politics produced in local geography, I will develop a materialist account of Urbana- Champaign. Geography is a substance and not just an instrument of local politics. Real (that is to say, material) local conditions themselves produce the imagined geographies that seem to underwrite them.
    Local Knowledge
Urbana-Champaign is a relatively quiet midwestern twin cities located three hours south of Chicago in east-central Illinois. We're just south of Interstate 74, and the last stop on I-72. The residential population is about 100,000; during the school year, the university probably adds about 25,000 to that number. Its not simply a university town, however. There are several major local industries: it supports factories for Kraft and Solo Cup, and its an old and thriving banking center. In fact, Urbana-Champaign is something of a regional center for a whole host of surrounding smaller towns. But the economy here (as in many other places) is not what it once was, and both towns are very concerned with 'image' issues, in terms of attracting businesses and in terms of attracting tourists. Thus, the promotional literature touts each town as having its own 'personality,' an over-generalization somewhat confirmed by my own experience.
