The Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois
  • The Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois (GSSI) was organized in Carterville, Illinois in March 1973, for the purpose of encouraging the science of genealogy; helping others gather genealogical information; and preserving, protecting, and publishing information of importance to Southern Illinois genealogy. GSSI includes in its geographic area the twenty-eight counties of Illinois south of interstate 70: Alexander, Clay, Clinton, Edwards, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Lawrence, Marion, Massac, Monroe, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Richland, Saline, St. Clair, Union, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, White, and Williamson. The Society issues a monthly Newsletter , and publishes a quarterly journal, The Saga of Southern Illinois , both of which are distributed to all members of the society. In addition, GSSI has an extensive list of book publications relating to the Southern Illinois region. Meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month in the GSSI library section of John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois, except in July, August, and October. On meeting days the GSSI Executive Board convenes at 1 p.m. and the general meeting, which includes a speaker or panel, begins at 2:15. The genealogy library is open on those days for browsing and research from 12:30 to 4 p.m. The October meeting is an all day conference and book fair co-sponsored by John A. Logan College held on the college campus, traditionally on the second Saturday of the month.

Setting this at 80 years allows guests to see all information for people born at least 80 years ago, but shows only names for people born after that. The progress to the Kidron database has picked up again. Marie has finished going through the entire list of potential merges and is now experimenting with incorporating some of the smaller databases into the Kidron file to simplify searches. We are still watching for the quantum leap to multi-user inputing that would allow multiple people to work on the same database simultaneously on a network or over the internet. This would allow more part-time people to work on things as time permitted without multiplying the problem of finding and eliminating duplicates.

    History and Genealogy
Thank you for visiting this independent DuPage County history and genealogy site! Enjoy your visit, and be sure to bookmark this site. Early History of DuPage County In the early days the Illiniwek, and later the Miami, Iroquois, Sak, Fox , Kickapoo and Pottawatomi Indians lived in this area, rich in fish, game and vegetation. In 1673 Father Jacques Marquette and French explorer Louis Joliet came to the area, following the Illinois and DesPlaines rivers from the Mississippi. Trappers and traders came throughout the 1700s and early 1800s, the best known being a Frenchman by the name of DuPage. In 1800 he settled where the east and west branches of the river join. The first permanent settlement was made in the fall of 1830 and the spring of 1831. Read more about the History of DuPage County in excerpts from "A History of the County of Du Page, Illinois," 1857.
