History of Montgomery County IL There were few white settlers in the area of Montgomery County prior to 1816. But it didn't take long for it to become settled. When they arrived, they found the area was populated by scattered settlements of Kickapoo Indians. White people drifted in and settled, first in the southeast part of the county, arriving most immediately from Bond and Fayette counties. The new arrivals built homes and began to farm along Hurricane Creek in the VanBurenburg area and in the Clear Springs neighborhood of Shoal Creek. After the War of 1812, Congress awarded each soldier who had served a bonus of 160 acres of "Soldiers Bounty Lands" in the then Illinois Territory. It was an award, but also an incentive to populate the western lands. Early residents of the area, including

I have redesigned the site to make it easier to navigate and am in the process of adding lots of new information and forms to make it easier for you to add your information. On the left there is a submissions form which you can use to send me your information to be added to the site. It comes to me automatically. I am also adding a form for your re-unions and announcements. Don't hesitate to use them, that is what they are there for. As well I have added a page called What's New, where you will find what has been added to the site and the date. I try to get everything online within 72 hours, but sometimes it takes longer due to life circumstances. Please keep a copy of your submission until you see it listed on the What's New page and if you don't see it in 30 days, contact me. Sometimes things do get in the wrong folder or just lost in the volume of mail that is received and it has been overlooked. It truly is nothing personal.

    1890 Special Veterans Census
A lucky break for some researchers trying to trace ancestors through the 20 year period between 1880 and 1900, a special Veterans census was taken in 1890 along with the regualar census . Since the 1890 census was all but completely destroyed in a fire in January 1921 at the Commerce Building in Washington D.C., this 1890 Veteran's schedule is an alternative means of documenting veterans or widows of veterans from the Civil War and War of 1812 who were still living and collecting pensions in 1890. The special census schedule still exists only for the states of Kentucky - Wyoming (the first group of states alphabetically appear to have been destroyed), and documents only Union veterans since the U.S. government obviously had little interest in keeping track of Confederate soldiers.

ILGenWeb The ILGenWeb Project is the state's largest family of free genealogy sites. Besides the main Illinois site, additional sites exist for each county. These web sites should be your first stop when searching for your ancestors once you know where they lived.
The project is part of the larger USGenWeb Project. Illinois Trails Illinois Trails is another volunteer group of sites similar to ILGenWeb although it hasn't been around nearly as long. Mail Lists Rootsweb sponsors Mail Lists for nearly every U.S. county and a vast majority of surnames. To subscribe, simply click on the link and it will open an e-mail letter to the list. Down in the body of the message simply type "SUBSCRIBE" (without the quotes) then click to send it. Don't worry about putting anything in the Subject line.
Also, turn off any signatures before you send it. The servers add you automatically so if there is anything other than "SUBSCRIBE" then you confuse the program. Once added you will receive a set of instructions back in e-mail. GenForum GenForum is one of the older free commercial websites for genealogy. The links on this page go to message forum boards for each county. The site is better known for its surname message boards.
