Information TRAINING PROGRAMS The RIVER BEND region has made a commitment to developing a job training system that meets the needs of both employers and workers in an increasingly complex economy. The flexibility of various state and federal funding sources allows programs to be designed and implemented in response to these specific needs. The flexible funding package available in Illinois could allow for any reasonable training-related expenses. For example, allowable expenses might include costs of:
  • Designing training curricula
  • Purchasing training materials
  • Recruitment, screening and testing of employees
  • Instructors'/trainers' wages
  • Leasing training facilities
  • Up to 50 percent of a company's total training costs
Working smart is what gives companies an advantage in today's competitive environment. In the RIVER BEND , our employers keep the technical, management, and human relations skills of their workforce up-to-date by using our competent and strong training system. It's the smart choice, and training programs can be made available to provide assistance for each of the various work groups (i.e., office and administration, supervisors and hourly workers) employed. The key to establishing a comprehensive training package is to blend the training programs listed below to meet the specific needs of a particular company.

The Professional Development Committee…Providing Training and Recognition to the Division of Student Affairs B y Anne Newman, Student Affairs Office The Division of Student Affairs has hundreds of trained professionals equipped to handle the many tasks, projects, and student concerns that emerge on a daily basis. What could Student Affairs provide to help these professionals get the support they need to do their jobs? You guessed it-more training and development. The Student Affairs Professional Development Committee is charged by the Vice President for Student Affairs to provide additional professional development and recognition to all members of the Division of Student Affairs. Each department in the Division sends a representative to the committee so that every office has a voice in the creation of professional development programs. The Student Affairs Office provides the committee with an annual budget of $5,000 to cover various related expenses such as speaker expenses, printing, and food. The Professional Development Committee’s mission is to develop community in the Division of Student Affairs through education, socialization, orientation, recognition, and communication. This mission is accomplished in many ways. The committee provides a new employee orientation every fall so each person joining the Division has a better understanding of what Student Affairs is all about. Each new staff member is provided with information about the different departments within student affairs, as well as information about projects important to the Division. New employees leave the session with the information they need to understand student affairs and how each student affairs department serves students in the ISU Community.

Research
Developmental and Cell Biology
Research is directed towards understanding cell motility and the nuclear and cytoskeletal aspects of fertilization. Pronuclear development is a pivotal period during fertilization, because the successful genetic reactivation of the dormant sperm nucleus and maternal chromatin by egg cytoplasm is essential for bipartental embryonic development. One project of the lab is to use an in vitro nuclear system to elucidate the factors regulating male pronuclear development at the cellular and molecular levels. Another area of research analyzes the role of the cytoskeleton in the fertilization process. These projects utilize fluorescence microscopy, video microscopy, and biochemical techniques. The object of these investigations is to gain an understanding of the nucleocytoplasmic interactions in cells.
