updated January 2, 2004 You are visitor number since 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 8, 1996. You may notice that there are a lot more than literacy links on this page. I teach in the Teacher Education Program for the University of Illinois at Springfield , and I started out with links to resources in language arts, reading, and emergent literacy for student's in my language arts/social studies methods class. As time went on, though, I began adding sites (both commercial and otherwise) I felt my students would enjoy visiting. I hope you enjoy visiting them too. If you have a website, or know of a website, that should be linked here, please send me a note at cook@uis.edu and I'll include that site in the next update. If you discover links that no longer work , please notify me of those also, so the page can be kept current. Thanks,

It was the last great American waterway built during the canal era, and brought both people and prosperity to Chicago and the entire Midwest. It revolutionized the transportation system of Illinois and helped establish Chicago as a passageway for goods and people traveling throughout the continent. Below are links to resources which may be helpful to teachers, researchers and anyone interested in the history of the canal or the communities of the National Heritage Corridor. Curriculum Materials

Educational Programs at ISM - Springfield
The Museum has a comprehensive suite of school and public educational programming in place to educate the public about the natural history, anthropology, fine art, and decorative art of Illinois. The philosophy of the education program is multi-fold: to serve as an interpretive link to the Museum's exhibits and collections thus bringing these resources to life; to stimulate learning at all age levels - from preschoolers to Elderhostel participants; to cultivate a relationship with segments of the comm unity not traditionally served by museums; to share our educational resources, the expertise of our curators, the many objects in our collections, and other items with the broader education community of Illinois. Combined, the elements of this philosophy create a dynamic, audience-sensitive approach to educational programming.
Research Programs
Illinois State Museum researchers investigate the climate, landforms, plants, animals, and human cultures of the Midwestern United States with a special emphasis on Illinois. Research illuminates long-term changes in natural environments and human societ ies and provides interdisciplinary perspectives of the rich natural and cultural history of the state.

The program will continue to emphasize the link between energy, recycling, the economy, and the environment and will provide Illinois students and teachers with the necessary information to make informed decisions. DCEO continues its partnership with the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project to provide comprehensive, multi-disciplinary educational resources to Illinois students and teachers. Through this partnership, ISTEP offers educational resources, including hands-on inquiry kits, bookmarks, curriculum, and posters, in addition to providing teacher workshops and presentations. Cyber schools where students complete all coursework online using home computers are a big hit with parents, who are signing up their children as quickly as the virtual doors open. However, test results for 2003 show students at many cyber schools are not measuring up to state standards or to their peers who attend brick-and-mortar schools.
