The "Gubernatorial Educational Mandates Relief Act of 2004" is aimed at the 2,800 pages of administrative rules imposed on education in Illinois. Senate Republicans have sent the Governor a letter offering to work with the administration to reduce mandates imposed on schools across Illinois. "For years, we have felt that excessive mandates placed upon our local school districts infringe upon the rights of locally-elected school boards, locally-hired administrators and teachers and parents themselves," the Senate Republicans wrote in the February 20 letter. "We applaud your decision to make the reduction or elimination of many of these mandates a centerpiece of your second year in office." Senate Republicans have filed a "vehicle" bill that can be used to eliminate many of the 2,800 pages of administrative rules imposed on Illinois school districts and takes a major step toward returning the control of local schools to local communities.
