Guidelines for the Nurse in the School Setting The Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) program recognizes the unique field of school nursing and the multiple roles that the nurse in the school environment is called upon to perform. The intent of this manual is to provide nurses working in the school setting with a set of emergency care guidelines that can be utilized during the delivery of care to the ill or injured student. In addition, other resources are contained in this manual which school nurses may find useful to reference or integrate into their current practice. The EMSC School Nurse Task Force has worked to ensure that the information presented in this document is accurate and in accordance with professional standards in effect at the time of publication. It is hoped that this document becomes a valuable addition to the resources already available within the arena of school nursing practice. Because schools provide services to students throughout the childhood and adolescent years, it is important when utilizing this resource manual to remain cognizant of pediatric developmental stages as well as "age appropriate" services and information. A baseline understanding of pediatric developmental characteristics and a general knowledge of appropriate approaches in the assessment and management of the varied age groups will be beneficial. The assessment and treatment approach when dealing with an injured or ill kindergartner is quite different from that of a high-school student, especially when considering participation of the child in the decision making process, provision of educational information and level of parental involvement.

For the child with special needs, playing can be difficult. Often a physically disabled child requires special guidance and instruction in how to play — and special toys with which to play. The Marianjoy Rehabilitation Center's Toy Library addresses the special needs of such children. The Toy Library is housed in Marianjoy's Therapeutic Recreation Department. More than 400 adapted and battery-operated toys, many specially designed for physically disabled children, were recently purchased with help from the Ronald McDonald Children's Charities Foundation and the Marianjoy Auxiliary. A unique system This collection of toys and games is for children ages infancy through 16. It is used to develop leisure activities, and to assist the development of language and cognitive skills. Nationally, demand for special education teachers has been on the rise for a decade. The number of students classified as learning-disabled is up more than 10 percent, partly due to more aggressive testing and identification. Over the past 25 years, the number of special education students has grown steadily and now accounts for 12 percent of the national school population, up from 8 percent in 1976.
While it searches for an answer to that question, CPS has to do what it can to fill special education vacancies. To widen the applicant pool beyond city limits, CPS suspended the residency requirement for one year and five teachers were hired as a result. Another 28 have applied this year, and will be hired if the board suspends residency another year.

On Jan. 16, the School Reform Board settled a lawsuit filed on behalf of 53,000 special education students with a plan that potentially will touch all 428,000 students in the system.

"One is, disabled kids are being left in regular education without the services they need to be successful or, two, they are being shipped all over the city for unknown reasons to seek out services which are presumably there." Designs first documented the illegal segregation of Chicago’s special education students in its 1991 report, "Caught in the Web II." In 1992, it joined with the Northwestern University Law Center filing Corey H. vs. the city and state boards of education. State action/inaction
At press time, the state was reworking a remediation plan for a deadline of May 29. Its first plan had been found wanting by both the plaintiffs and attorneys for the CPS. Money is a major issue. Southern Illinois University School of Law Self Help Classes The Self Help Legal Center administers and coordinates self help classes on divorce. The classes are an opportunity for you to receive individual help in completing forms as well as an opportunity for you to ask questions about filing, court procedure, and hearings. The class, however, is not an opportunity for you to receive individual legal advice or counseling about a particular problem. Students attending the class are presumed to have already decided whether they want to proceed with court action as the classes are not meant to advise students as to whether or what legal course of action they should choose. Self help classes are taught by volunteer attorneys from the southern Illinois area and are provided free of charge. Special needs were the focus of the third annual Jewish day school conference, held on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy/Kushner Yeshiva High School in Livingston.
Keynote speaker Rick Lavoie, a nationally recognized expert in the field of special needs and learning disabilities, set the tone for the day, sponsored by the New Jersey Association of Jewish Day Schools.
In his talk, Batteries Not Included: Motivating the Reluctant Learner, Lavoie offered formulas for success with special needs and learning disabled students that educators who attended the lecture said could apply to all students.
Offering the example of climbing Mt. Everest, he pointed out that while attractive, the effort required, at least for him, is not realistic and the goal is really not attainable.
Lavoie, who has worked with Jewish day schools in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Illinois, Cleveland, New Jersey, and Montreal, reflected on the deep respect for all children found in traditional Jewish sources and Jewish communities. He cited the book Unconventional Wisdom: Torah Perspective on the Child Who Has Difficulty Learning by Rabbi Reuven Elkins.

A parent support group will provide needed emotional support and valuable feedback and information from other parents. You will also get a better idea of systemic issues and how they impact on other children with disabilities. Parent group meetings are a great place to compare strategies and share stories from the field!

Washington Times Our Legal System Hides From Bullies Nancy Salvato January 14, 2004 The judicial branch of the government stepped in to rule that all students are afforded first amendment rights as long as they don’t materially and substantially disrupt classes or other school activities . The legislative branch of the government was also willing to step into the school’s domain when they were compelled to enact PL-94-142 which means “special needs” students are entitled to a free appropriate program implemented in the least restrictive environment. The removal of a pupil with an educational disability from the pupil's regular class occurs only when the nature or severity of the educational disability is such that education in the pupil's regular class with the use of appropriate supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily.
