GENERAL INFORMATION
The Institute: An Overview
Reflecting our defining focus on space, the Institute is entitled Redefining American Spaces: the City, the Land, and the Body ; and, in order to evaluate thoroughly traditional and still emerging definitions of space, the Institute is organized into five modules. The first of these, Cultural and Critical Spaces The Geography of the Body and the Family , the focus will be on a still-emerging body of literary criticism and theory that envisions the human body as a unique kind of space. The third module this year, Landscape and History , will be devoted to exploration of Western outdoor space as prototype of the American Western myth. The fourth module, The Suburb, the Exurb, and the Farm , is based on two of the major concerns of contemporary American literary criticism, the nature of the city and its role as the center of cultural diversity. The last module of the year, The Urban and Ethnicity , is based on two of the major concerns of contemporary American literary criticsm, the nature of the city and its role as the center of cultural diversity.

Print text version. Hemp crop study comes up for vote in Illinois By Nancy Chesley, QUAD-CITY TIMES January 7, 2001 SPRINGFIELD Rep. I. Ronald Lawfer, R-Stockton, hopes his fellow representatives will agree that industrial hemp is not marijuana and should be researched as a possible alternative crop for farmers. He is sponsoring legislation that would authorize a study of the crop under very controlled conditions in the agricultural departments at the University of Illinois at Urbana and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. The topic has drawn controversy because industrial hemp is biologically akin to marijuana. Both have the same botanical name, cannabis sativa. Supporters say industrial hemp could benefit farmers as a third crop to rotate with corn and soybeans in their fields, helping to reduce plant disease. Lawfer said the leafy stalks can be grown with little or no pesticides, another environmental advantage.

Hunter Fact Sheet Playgrounds ... Visitor Center
Nestled in the Shawnee National Forest, just minutes south of Carbondale, the area was named for the unique impressions made by its massive sandstone structures. Eons of geological faulting and folding have molded a landscape like none other, which is now clothed in lush garments of fern, moss, large flowering mints, hundreds of species of wild flowers and 75-plus varieties of towering trees. The natural splendor of Giant City has made it a renowned retreat that attracts more than 1.2 million visitors annually.
History Shelter bluffs, or rock shelters, worn into the sides of the cliffs have revealed evidence of human habitation in this region from as early as 10,000 years ago, and the blackened ceilings caused by their fires are still visible today. On an 80-foot sandstone cliff near the main entrance, one can see the remains of a Native American stone wall that was erected between A.D. 600-800. The first European settlers moved into the area from Kentucky and Tennessee in the early 1800s, and by 1850, settlers were using the land to cultivate fruit trees. During the Civil War, many of the cliffs and canyons were used as havens by soldiers of both the Union and Confederate armies.

More cities, states opt for Canadian drugs
By Julie Appleby Discussion Questions and Additional Resources Summary Statement With prescription drug prices soaring and a healthcare system teetering on the brink of implosion, Americans are beginning to look for other options for healthcare - some of those options being in other countries. The problem, one of many, faced by officials in Washington is how to control the flow of Canadian prescription drugs finding their way into the hands of millions of Americans. And it's not only citizens seeking cheaper drugs; it's city and state governments. Illinois says taxpayers' dollars are being wasted in the millions. New Hampshire; Minnesota; Boston, Massachusetts; and Mobile, Alabama have made moves to establish networks to provide their citizens with, at the very least, an alternative. All of this is just the beginning. This case study looks to present both sides of the story: an argument in favor of further restrictions and an argument for deregulation. Additionally, it presents the legal implications and the possible beneficial aftermath of this all-important issue. Along with the controversial Illinois study statistics are articles representing doctors and Americans in favor of easing the regulations on importation of Canadian prescription drugs. Diametrically opposed are the FDA, the Bush administration, and many American drug companies and their lobbyists.

HAZUS can estimate losses on a variety of levels. A level one analysis is a basic census tract data set with limited soil data. The highest level of analysis, or level three, uses comprehensive building inventory, lifeline, and soil data. For this comparison, data collection and manipulation were not used, so a level one analysis was performed. In the comparison, the same six cities were used, as in the original study. The comparison used magnitude 6.5 & 7.5 events that are more likely to occur in the Central United States. Epicenters were used from the historic 1811-1812 earthquakes. In the original study, epicenters "closest to each city" were used. Theses factors, combined with the limited data in a level one analysis, do not estimate the destruction levels to be as high as the original study. With the recent activity in the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone, 7.0 events were added to the cities of Paducah, Kentucky; Evansville, Indiana; and Carbondale, Illinois.

This case study synthesizes interview data with other sources to paint a descriptive picture of governance and related issues facing Illinois' higher education system. It is based on documents gathered from public offices, higher education institutions and relevant publications. Interviews with state officials, education administrators, board members, faculty, and staff took place in March and May of 1995.

    Political Culture
    Issues for Higher Education
Illinois, with nearly 12 million residents, ranks fifth among the case study states and sixth in the United States in the size of its population. It is the 14th most diverse state (15 percent African-American, 8 percent Hispanic, 3 percent Asian) in the United States, with a relatively stable African-American population and rapidly growing populations of Hispanics and Asian/Pacific Islanders. Overall, Illinois anticipates static enrollments and static funding for higher education as the student population becomes more diverse and less prepared. Downsizing government and increasing productivity and efficiency are high priorities for the state.
Illinois residents are relatively affluent, young and well-educated. As summarized in Table 1, Illinois ranks at or near the top of the study states in terms of per capita income and the proportion of high school graduates in the population. It has a relatively low proportion of its population in poverty compared to other study states. The state is about average among study states in potential tax revenues and the level of education for the general population. It is also about average in its high school dropout rate and the percentage of families who report that English is not spoken in the home.
