Case Study Summary from Original Proposal:
The Florida effort will be carried out on a cooperative effort by the Florida Growth Management Data Network Coordinating Council and the Department of Environmental Protection, Division of State Lands. The Metadata Standard will be applied to one of four components of a Land Records Modernization Project. This particular component provides for the data collection of the land parcels that affect the inventory of ownership. The parcels are identified by parcel number and document number and attribute data relates these parcels to additional land records information for the State's cadastral layer state-wide for the division of State Lands. The parcels will be entered using coordinate geometry methodology.
Project Participants:
  • David T. Stage, Florida Growth Management Data Network Coordinating Council
  • Pamela J. Butler, Florida Department of Environmental Protection

Introduction
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Florida Geographic Information Board documented DEP's State Lands Information System for the purpose of assessing the utility of the Federal Geographic Data Committee's Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM). No tools were used to facilitate the creation of the metadata, requiring that the participants read and understand the Federal Geographic Data Committee's publication of the CSDGM and then convert it into metadata that followed the format provided in the publication. Although formatting of the report was discussed, it was agreed that the product would follow the structure of the standard.

Introduction
In 1993, when I first began to research theatre sites on the internet, it was a difficult and laborious project. Sites were hard to find, search engines were underdeveloped, there were very few theatre people who had taken an interest in, or even knew about the internet. Obviously, things have changed. Now the World Wide Web is easily accessible through a variety of web browsers, making specific knowledge of such utilities as telnet, ftp, and gopher (remember that one?) more or less obsolete.

9. Ground-Water Studies In Illinois

http://il.water.usgs.gov/proj/gwstudies/
Ground-Water Studies in Illinois
Why do we study ground water?
Ground water is an important source of water supply in Illinois. About 2.5 million people in Illinois are supplied from ground-water resources. Total ground-water withdrawls in the State was approximately 953 million gallons per day in 1995. Ground-water withdrawals account for about 21 percent of the total water withdrawn for public-water supplies in Illinois. Tens of thousands of persons in the State rely on ground water from residential wells as their sole source of water. The largest amount of ground-water withdrawls is in the northern one-third of the State where large supplies of potable water are available in aquifers that range in depth from about 10 feet to about 1,500 feet. Ground-water quality is a major concern in Illinois. Water-quality degradation or contamination results from point and nonpoint sources throughout the State. In many industrialized parts of the State, including the metropolitan areas of Chicago, Rockford, and St. Louis, ground water in aquifers in the glacial deposits and bedrock has been degraded by improperly contained or disposed chemicals. In many agricultural areas, the quality of ground water in the underlying shallow aquifers has been degraded by the routine application of agricultural chemicals. Surface-water quality has been degraded in some areas because of the influx of contaminated ground water.

3-D Modeling of Mt. Simon Gas Storage Fields Could Enhance Winter Gas Availability from the Illinois Basin
A two-year research study partnership between the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS), natural gas storage companies and the Department of Energy's Federal Energy Technology Center will develop 3-dimensional computer models for natural gas storage wells in the Mt. Simon Gas Storage Fields in the Illinois Basin. Underground, water-filled sand/sandstone aquifers in the Mt. Simon area in Northern Illinois are used extensively to store natural gas for peak seasonal usage in the Midwest. In Illinois alone, the Mt. Simon formations hold 60% of the total gas storage inventory, an important supply for peak winter deliveries for northern Illinois cities, particularly Chicago. Illinois is ranked fourth in the nation in natural gas storage with between 1.2 and 1.6 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas in storage. It has 600 billion cubic feet (bcf) of working gas. That is the gas stored in reservoirs for use in the winter months. The remainder is cushion gas, which stays in the reservoir year round. The physical structure of the Mt. Simon reservoirs, however, is geologically complex, making it difficult to predict their performance as natural gas suppliers.
