Jamaican iguana making a comeback
(CNN) Biologists at Jamaica's Hope Zoo are working to bring the nation's largest native land animal, the Jamaican iguana, back from the brink of extinction. Until a hunter's dog cornered one of the iguanas in 1990, the rare reptile hadn't been seen in about 50 years. The zoo biologists are now raising the lizards and preparing them for reentry into the wild. CNN's Natalie Pawelski looks at the iguanas fight for life. I would have to say that iguanas, by far, are my favorite lizards. About a year ago I got my first iguana, names 'Farphanoogle', 'Iggie', 'Noogle'. By the way my brother thought I should name him that.
Anyway, throughout this page I will tell you exactly what I do to care for my Iguana. Do not use my information ONLY. A lot of care should be taken to research iguana's as I have done. But first a brief history lesson.
The green iguana (the one that I have), Iguana iguana, is often said to have come from the 'jungles of South America' however, they extend to the north, such as Mexico. The green iguana can grow between 4 and 6 feet. (no I do not believe that iguanas will grow with their surroundings. In fact I don't believe that is true with any animal) So the first thing that you would want to do is MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE ROOM! Another fact is that iguanas can live up to 20 years and beyond when in captivity, and all proper care is given. As well iguanas are herbivores and should be given such a diet with no exceptions. Some people may say that animal protein is an asset, at a young age, but I don't so if you want to believe them then go ahead.
Housing
So now you may have decided to get an iguana and don't know what to put it in. Well you're are probably never going to find a suitable home for the creature. You see, iguana's grow at a rapid speed, doubling in length within the first year, hitting an average length of 5 feet within the first 5 years. There is no one that can answer the question of a suitable home. There are only guidelines. If you never plan on taking your iguana out then you must provide the largest space available. possibly 2x its final length in all dimensions. However, if you plan and will take your iguana out then a suitable home would be 1.5x the final length of the iguana is all dimensions. I know that this can be costly, but the health of the iguana should come first. (note: it is ok to put a young iguana in a smaller home. The problem is that it will cost more money when the iguana begins to grow)

Iguana is the common name for a large "New World" lizard. "Iguana" a Spanish word of Indian origin also serves as the scientific name for the family. Iguanas are diurnal. They have distinctive eyelids, external eardrums, dewlaps (throat pouches), each limb has 5 toes with sharp claws allowing them to climb. Unlike most lizards, Iguanas are vegetarians. The Galapagos Islands are home to Marine Iguanas Land Iguanas and a Hybrid mix of the whose father's are Marine Iguanas and mother's are Land Iguanas.
Growing to approximately 3 ft (1 m) in length these sea-going Iguanas exist only in the Galapagos Islands. Living on the black lava shore rocks they have developed into efficient swimmers feeding off shore mostly on marine algae and seaweed. The cold waters of the Galapagos provide both the necessary food for the Marine Iguanas and its most deadly threats. The cold temperatures can immobilize an iguana if it remains in the water too long. Until the arrival of man, Marine Iguanas only threats were that of larger fish and sharks encountered while swimming. When Marine Iguanas are not feeding they seek safety and warmth of the land. In the 19th century when Charles Darwin visited the islands he found thousands of Marine Iguanas living along the rocky shore. He picked one up and threw it into the ocean it instantly swam back to the shore. This was repeated several times and the Iguana continued to seek the safety of the shore when it could have easily swum off to escape Darwin.

Volume 28, Number 7; July, 2001
Iguanas in Heat
Reprinted from Ark'Type , the Newsmagazine of the WSPCR (the Westcoast Society for the Protection and Conservation of Reptiles), February/March 2001 Domestic iguanas go into their breeding season at any point of the year, but spring always seems to be the time when a majority of iguanas enter their cycle. Some iguanas will not go through a noticeable breeding season, while others will be very noticeable! Often poor health or an enclosure that is too small will prevent the cycle. This is for the best (though even unhealthy iguanas may try to lay eggs and this can be fatal) since a female needs to be in optimum health to survive egg production, which she will do with or without a male to copulate with (the eggs of course would not be fertile if there was no copulation). Often an increase in the health or environment of an iguana will spontaneously stimulate the onset of breeding season. This is common in a rescued iguana or an iguana who suddenly gets exposed to proper UV (or even just boosted UV such as when the old UV light is replaced). Age-wise an iguana typically reaches sexual maturity by 2 years. Size, however, rather than age is the true measure of sexual maturity. A snout to vent length of six inches in a male and 10 inches in a female makes them big enough to start cycling.

Prospectus
The Northwest Green Iguana Rehabilitation Center (NGIRC) is to be a non-profit organitzaion created to rehabilitate and find suitable homes for unwanted green iguanas. The fact that the green iguana, the lizard with the "punk haircut", has become this decade’s novelty pet as well as the amount of green iguanas that are imported into this country each year makes it necessary to provide a "Humane Society" for these animals. The NGIRC is being established for just that purpose. The initial facility will include six fully equipped enclosures for homeless green iguanas. Veterinary checkups and care as needed will be provided for each green iguana admitted into the facility. If the need for more enclosures arises, the facility will be expanded as funds allow. Sponsors are being sought to donate materials and funds to make this project possible. Sponsors will be given credit for their donations in the form of dedications.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Iguanas Scientific classification Scientific classification refers to how biologists group and categorize extinct and living species of organisms. Modern classification has its roots in the system of Carolus Linnaeus, who grouped species according to shared physical characteristics. These groupings have been revised since Linnaeus to improve consistency with the Darwinian principle of common descent. Molecular systematics, which uses Genomic DNA analysis has driven many recent revisions and is likely to continue to do so. Scientific classification belongs to the science of taxonomy or biological systematics.

Typically, they are multicellular in composition and capable of both locomotion and responding to their surroundings. Unlike plants, animals do not photosynthesize, instead consuming plants or other organisms to grow and sustain themselves. Most animals have a body plan that becomes fixed as they mature and, except in animals that metamorphose, is established early in their development from embryos. The scientific study of animals is called zoology.

Marine Iguanas When Charles R. Darwin (1809-1882), a British scientist best known for his thoughts on the theory of evolution and natural selection, visited the Galapagos Islands, he described the marine iguana as "a hideous-looking creature, of a dirty black color, stupid and sluggish in its movements."
Are marine iguanas really as Darwin clamed them to be? Well, to be fair, marine iguanas are not pretty. But, Darwin's assessment of marine iguanas' low intelligence and clumsiness is unnecessarily harsh.
