Big mouth with saw-like teeth, eyelids, long tails, dorsal crests, dewlaps, and clawed feet on four sprawling legs used to swim and climb trees commonly characterize the different species of Iguanas. Varying in color (greens, browns, and yellows), these natives to deserts and seas of North and South America live about 15-20 years. Mainly herbivores, Iguanas supplement their diet with insects, worms, and etc. This popular lizard pet has fairly strict feeding and housing requirements.

Caring for Green Iguanas Ron Hines DVM PhD 7/27/03 General
About a third of green iguanas (Iguana iguana) sold in pet stores survive to maturity. This is due to the stress these creatures receive during transport from South and Central America and inadequate care and nutrition. Of those that survive, more than half are surrendered to rescue agencies or simply abandoned due to their large size, activity and aggressiveness. So one should think twice about purchasing the cute, baby iguanas for sale inexpensively at pet shops. Given good environment and diet, they rapidly grow into formidable pets. Caging Requirements
The best cleaning and sanitizing agent is a 1:20 solution of common household bleach and water. Flooring
Iguanas that roam loose in the home in most of the United States tend to get too cold in the winter and do not get adequate sunshine. By the time the problem is noticed these pet have generalized septicemias and metabolic bone disease that are often incurable. So I limit the time iguanas remain free in the house. Diet
Mustard Greens Cabbage Sweet potato
Dandelion and Dandelion Flowers Spinach Bell pepper
Shredded and soaked Alfalfa cubes Clover Mango
Plantain Hibiscus flowers Cherries
Green beans Fruit tree flowers Strawberries
Squash Romaine lettuce Blueberries
Apple Broccoli Papaya Pear Collard greens Green beans Rehydrated Alfalfa Cubes Powdered Alfalfa String beans I like to make Alfalfa a part of every meal. Dice and mix the ingredients well so the lizard eats a good variety of ingredients each meal. Often the best outer portions of these vegetables are discarded by the grocery store. If you can maintain good relations with the produce department staff, you can often salvage the portions they discard. Alfalfa cubes are available at feed stores. Powdered alfalfa is equally as good. It can be purchased at health food stores. Most of these products can be stored frozen.

Pet Sitting is a great alternative to kenneling your pet or having your neighbors or friends watch your pet.
Kennels restrict pick up times, they can be very expensive, they usually do not conform to our pets schedules and most importantly they often make our pets uncomfortable by being away from home.
Asking neighbors or friends to watch your pets can create a difficult situation because you often feel like you are imposing on them, so you don't lay out clear guidlines as to what you want, how many visitis you want, and how often they need to be feed and walked.
Consider Pet Sitting. Your pet stays at home, where he or she is comfortable. When you arrange for us to visit your pet, feed your pet, and exercise your pet you arrange them based on your pets schedules, not at the whim of the kennels, and not when your neighbor or friend remembers to show up.

Iguanas Fit Their Shrinking Food Supply
A study published in the journal Science in October 1999 showed that a community's biological stability is based on its species' ability to withstand environmental changes, such as warmer climates and chemical changes in the atmosphere. Based on a report published in the January 6, 2000 issue of Nature
Learning about the Problem
There are many environmental changes that require species to adapt in order to survive, e.g., global warming, loss of habitat due to human expansion, water and air pollution. In order to learn more about how species adapt, you can work this series of Biology Explorer activities. (Requires Logal Express. Get a free trial subscription now.):

Spill starves iguanas
Ecologist sues over wrecked iguana study.
6 June 2002 JOHN WHITFIELD The tanker Jessica caused low-level oil pollution when it ran aground in 2001. An ecologist whose studies of marine iguanas in the Galapagos Islands were damaged by an oil spill is suing the oil tanker's owner and insurer. Martin Wikelski of Princeton University in New Jersey is seeking US$600,000 in damages as part of a wider, $14-million claim being made by the Galapagos National Park against the master, owners and insurers of the Jessica The park is also suing Petrocomercial, an arm of the Ecuadorian state oil company, which owned the oil. . But after the oil spill, the focus of his observations switched sharply from evolution to pollution. Following the accident, Wikelski and his colleagues monitored the iguanas at an oil-affected site and at one that had escaped contamination. In this week's Nature, they report that by December 2001 more than 60% of the marked iguanas at the contaminated site had died, compared with none at the site that escaped pollution The team suggests that small amounts of oil killed microbes in the iguanas' guts that enable the animals to digest algae, causing them to starve. "Even a tiny amount of oil in the water can be very harmful," says Wikelski.

The Sanctuary
Our Cover Kids Sam and Camellia, Raga and Bruce lay together in the Downstairs Warren. They are four of more than two hundred and fifty Animals who have found their way to The Sanctuary. Camellia, one of the butterscotch colored Rabbits, was one of 23 Rabbits who were rescued from a Golf Course where many had been born after residents near the course dumped adult Rabbits. Her apparent twin, Samantha, is really not a relation. Sam along with her three sisters were found in a box in a shopping center's parking lot. Luckily, concerned employees of nearby stores called the Shelter and Humane Officers were able to pick them up quickly. One of her sisters, Spot can be seen on our Rabbit's Page
Bruce and Raga are related, sister and brother, though they came from different litters. The humans who were responsible for allowing their parents to breed were desperate to place them along with their siblings. They claimed, and this is a direct quote, "We didn't know what would happen if you put a male and a female together." It took them five litters to figure it out.
The Sanctuary no longer accepts Animals from private individuals. We are committed to working with our local Shelter, where we are making a real difference for the abandoned Rabbits and other Animals in our community.

Naturalists initially thought damage had been avoided
Scientists say an oil spill off the Galapagos Islands last year has caused the death of more than 60% of marine iguanas - a species unique to the Pacific Ocean islands. The spill happened when an Ecuadorian oil tanker ran aground in January 2001 depositing around three million litres of crude oil into the sea.
We came back after a year and were astonished to find a large number of skeletons on the coast
Scientist Martin Wikelski Yet compared with other tanker accidents, the concentrations of oil found just offshore were fairly small, and the prevailing view at the time was that Santa Fe, one of the Galapagos Islands, had escaped serious contamination. But now researchers have concluded that even this small amount of pollution can have severe effects on wild animals.

March 4, 2003 Technical Help Artist: The Iguanas Title: Plastic Silver 9 Volt Heart Label: Yep Roc Records Country: United States Region: The Americas Music Available from: Public Broadcasting One More World Music at: BBC Music Online One of The Big Easy's most popular party bands, The Iguanas, have been making music together for more than a decade with a distinct Mexican flavor. Clark Boyd reports. Listening to The Iguanas new CD called Plastic Silver 9 Volt Heart, is like taking a musical tour of New Orleans itself. There's roots-rock, R and B, jazz and a healthy dose of Tex-Mex rhythms. The Iguanas boil all those influences up into their own signature gumbo, a kind-of funky, Cajun swamp-pop. The tune "Mexican Candy" switches effortlessly between English and Spanish. The quintet sends plenty of nods south-of-the-border on Plastic Silver 9 Volt Heart. The track called "Zacatecas," is set in a dive bar. The kind of place where a potent late-night mix of lonliness and tequila shots can fuel all sorts of strange encounters.
