Iguana Bone Disease Introduction Cause Symptoms Diagnosis ... Prognosis
Introduction The most common reptile brought to our hospital is the green iguana. The primary reason owners bring in their ill green iguana's is because they have developed a disease called metabolic bone disease (MBD), also known as nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism (NSHP). The cause of this disease is poor husbandry, especially an inadequate diet. Unfortunately, the literature abounds with erroneous information on the precise needs of these creatures. This outdated an incorrect information continues to be propagated by individuals and organizations with good intentions but limited knowledge. Iguanas are not the only reptile that encounters this problem. We find it in many types of lizards, turtles, and tortoises. It does not occur in carnivorous reptiles like snakes and monitor lizards very often because the whole prey they consume provides a proper diet. We have a short Quicktime movie on an Iguana with twitching muscles. You need Quicktime from www.apple.com to view it.
Cause
This disease has many factors that work together in causing this condition. The primary reason iguanas develop this disease is due to a diet too low in calcium. More specifically, the ratio of calcium to phosphorous (usually the phosphorous is too high) in their diets is inadequate to promote growth and sustain normal physiological functions. As a result, they become very ill, and can even succumb to the disease.

Iguanas, a trendy pet in the U.S., are becoming endangered
June 4, 1997
Web posted at: 11:47 p.m. EDT (0347 GMT) (CNN) It's a common sight along Central American highways: young children hawking iguanas they have captured to passing motorists. It's illegal, but that doesn't stop the kids from selling the exotic reptiles to help put food on the family table.
(1.4M/37 sec. small frame QuickTime movie (2.9M/37 sec. large frame QuickTime movie In Honduras, iguana trafficking has become so prolific that the reptile is now an endangered species. But Miguel Facusse is trying to counter the threat by breeding iguanas at a farm in the southern part of the country. He is taking 10,000 iguanas, which he intends to reproduce and set free. "We hope that this is successful to take to other lands in the country," the iguana breeder said. The secret to breeding iguanas lies with the male. When it's time to mate, he takes on an orange color. The deeper, the orange, the more females he's likely to attract. Once they can make it on their own, they are released into the wilderness.

Plight of the iguana: Studies of the Galapagos population show that the herbivorous reptiles shrank as much as 2.7 inches, or 20 percent of their body length. January 7, 2000
Web posted at: 1:12 p.m. EST (1812 GMT) By Environmental News Network staff Nature MESSAGE BOARD Evolution In two studies of Galapagos marine iguanas, one spanning 18 years and the other occupying eight years, scientists found that the herbivorous reptiles shrank as much as 2.7 inches, or 20 percent of their body length. "Many people working with amphibians have seen this phenomenon but have not reported it because they don't believe it, or because the thinking is that vertebrates can't shrink," said Judy Stamps, a professor of evolution and ecology at the University of California at Davis.

92. Care Of Green Iguanas
iguanas have short, powerful limbs equipped with strong, sharp claws (for climbing and digging), and a long, strong tail. They can reach lengths of 66½ feet.
http://www.caringtogether.com/exotics/iguanas.html
The green (or common) iguana (Iguana iguana) is an arboreal (tree-living) and diurnal (daylight-active) lizard usually found at elevations below 3000 feet in tropical and subtropical regions from northern Mexico to central South America. It is most often found in the vicinity of rivers and streams. Male iguanas tend to be larger and have brighter overall coloration than females. The distinct color of males is especially pronounced during the breeding season. Males tend to have larger heads than females, in part because of swollen jowls. Both sexes have 12-13 prominent pores arranged in a row on the underside of both thighs. These glandular structures secrete a waxy substance with which iguanas mark their territory and identify each other. As the males mature, their "femoral pores" develop slight outward projections. This developmental modification probably enables the male to better grasp the female during copulation. An iguana's skin is entirely covered with very tiny scales. Iguanas cannot change their coloring (as chameleons do), but certain areas of their skin can become darker when exposed to direct sunlight. Young iguanas are pale blue-green with dark-ringed tails. They mature to a lighter, more earthy color, usually with dark vertical bars on the body and tail. Vision, hearing and the sense of smell are acute. In their natural environment, iguanas tend to be very wary, hiding or fleeing at any sign of danger. Iguanas are somewhat clumsy but accomplished tree climbers. They tend to bask by day on tree branches, often over water. When frightened or threatened, they usually drop (sometimes from great heights) into the water below. Being excellent swimmers, they quickly make their way to protective cover by pressing their front limbs along their sides and swishing their powerful tails from side to side. Iguanas can also safely land on the ground and run to protective cover after jumping from substantial heights. When threatened or cornered, iguanas can defend themselves with astonishingly quick, whip-like lashes of their tails and with their claws and jaws.

Related Books and Items Recent studies indicated that the iguana iguana or known as the rainforest common green iguana is one of the few completely herbivorous (plant-eating) lizard in its natural habitat. Therefore, the information on iguana care and its food supply should be based on that aspect. It is important then, to consider physiology, environment and diet in order to keep an iguana in the picture of good health. Iguana management is dependent on the understanding of the digestive system of a pet. They are considered Hind-Gut fermenters which means the general well being is directed by the lower intestinal tract. The lower intestinal tract is responsible for vitamin production, fatty acid production, water reabsorption, etc. It is essential then that, even in juvenile iguanas, a crude fiber of 14-16% should be observed to satisfy this requirement. Older iguanas should receive a greater proportion of 16-18% in their diets. It is noteworthy to caution that many iguanas suffer for malnutrition and inappropriate management resulting in unwanted, sick or abandoned lizards. It is difficult to get an accurate guide for care since many recommendations are based on personal experience and not scientific research. So the best way to approach it is to examine the wild iguana's natural habitat and food supply.

Updated February 9, 1999 Now on to the info... Be sure to stop by our iguana Gwar's Tribute page CONTENTS Introduction The first thing to keep in mind is that green iguanas, if taken care of properly. will grow rather large. Many people buy a baby iguana on impulse, and then when it starts to grow larger than they were prepared to handle, they don't want it anymore. In our experience, these iguanas usually end up for sale in the papers, or pawned off onto local herp societies, who already have their hands full trying to find suitable homes for some of the lesser known, harder-to-care for reptiles. Remember that iguanas do not only grow as large as their tank. When they get older, they will usually either need a large, custom-built cage, their own "iguana" room, or, if you choose, free roam of the house with a well-heated basking spot. Back To Top Selection When selecting an iguana for a potential pet, it's a good idea to pick the one that seems to be alert, yet reasonably calm when you stick your hand in the tank! This iguana should have clear and bright eyes, be free from sores, abrasions, or other questionable marks, and appear to be in generally good health(not skin and bones). It's probably also a good idea to make sure the iguana is not covered with feces, or that the enclosure it's living in is not completely dirty and disgusting. Excessively dirty living conditions are a great place for bacteria to multiply and disease to spread.
