SERENDIPITY REIGNS FOR THE IGUANAS
By GERRY GALIPAULT (April 11, 2003) Y ou know an album is going well when a train whistle blaring outside the recording studio fits in perfectly with a track. That's just how fortuitous things were for The Iguanas on "Plastic Silver 9 Volt Heart," their debut Yep Roc The defining moment of their eight-day session may have been during the recording of "Sugar Cane," when a train passed by on cue. "It happened just as we recording it," singer-guitarist Rod Hodges said recently. "We didn't just stick that on there. It fits perfect; that's why we left it. It was even in the right key." The band was using a temporary studio while another more-soundproof facility was being built in the same building. "There were all kinds of noises - trains, motorcycles, people yelling," Hodges said. "I'm sure those sounds are on the album, too, but I just haven't noticed them yet." Hodges says he and band mates Rene Coman (bass, piano), Derek Huston (tenor sax), Doug Garrison (drums) and Joe Cabral (vocals, multiple instruments) love the cohesiveness of the album and are anxious to take it on the road. Getting Niebank on board may have been the difference. He kept the sessions tight and simple, emphasizing a live feel.

  • Natural History Requirements in Captivity
    Natural History
The green (or common) iguana (Iguana iguana) is an arboreal (tree-living) and diurnal (daylight-active) lizard usually found at elevations below 3,000 feet in tropical and subtropical regions from northern Mexico to central South America It is most often found in the vicinity of rivers and streams. Iguanas have short, powerful limbs equipped with strong, sharp claws (for climbing and digging), and a long, strong tall. They can reach lengths of 6-6 1/2 feet A large flap of skin (the dewlap) hangs from the throat and helps regulate body temperature. Iguanas also have a prominent crest of soft spines (longer in males) along the midline of the neck and back, beginning at the base of the skull. Male iguanas tend to be larger and have brighter overall coloration than females. The distinct color of males is especially pronounced during the breeding season. Males tend to have larger heads than females, in part because of swollen jowls. Both sexes have 12-13 prominent pores arranged in a row on the underside of both thighs. These glandular structures secrete a waxy substance with which iguanas mark their territory and identify each other. As the males mature, their "femoral pores" develop slight outward projections. This developmental modification probably enables the male to better grasp the female during copulation.

Perhaps no member of the Galapagos fauna has met with as much revulsion by historic visitors as the marine iguana, Amblyrhynchus cristatus . In 1798, Captain James Colnett wrote: " The guanas are small, and of a sooty black, which, if possible, heightens their native ugliness. Indeed, so disgusting is their appearance, that no one on board could be prevailed on, to take them as food." Indeed, even Darwin himself was much replused by it, calling it "a hideous-looking creature, of a dirty black colour, stupid, and sluggish in its movements." In his diary, he noted that : "The black Lava rocks on the beach are frequented by large (2-3 ft) most disgusting clumsy Lizards. They are as black as the porous rocks over which they crawl & seek their prey from the Sea. Somebody calls them 'imps of darkness'. They assuredly well become the land they inhabit." Marine iguanas are widely distributed throughout the islands. Although the different populations vary in size and color, they are all considered to be a single species. The smallest are found on

Darwin was not much impressed with the land iguana: "...they are ugly animals, of a yellowish orange beneath, and of a brownish-red colour above: from their low facial angle they have a singularly stupid appearance." The land iguanas are typically divided into two species, Conolophus subcristatus and Conolophus pallidus, although there are some data to suggest that the later is merely a local variant, a subspecies, of the former. C. subcristatus is more widespread throughout the archipelago while C. pallidus is restrected Santa Fe C. subcristatus is pretty much as Darwin described it, but since he had not visited Santa Fe he never saw C. pallidus , which is much more uniform and paler in color, and possesses a more pronounced ridge of spines. C. subcristatus once once had a much broader distribution and higher population numbers than it does today. In 1835 Darwin was impressed with their numbers, remarking that:

Are Iguanas good pets?
How to properly care for a pet iguana.
Iguanas are not easy to care for. The iguana has become a very popular pet but few people are aware of the difficulty of caring for them. Iguanas are very expensive to care for. They require a very large cage, a varied fresh diet, proper temperatures and UV lighting. Adult iguanas can become very aggressive. UV light bodyOffer(30393) An iguana requires at least 2-3 hours of direct UV light a day. If they dont receive this light through direct sunshine they must receive it through artificial UV-B lights. Direct sunshine means direct, not through glass. Iguanas that dont receive UV lighting will suffer from MBD (metabolic bone disease). Without UV light iguanas will also have off-colored skin, shedding problems, and appetite problems. If artificial UV-B is used the iguana will need a full days lighting. A full days worth of lighting is a twelve-hour light cycle. The UV-B tubes must be no further than 18 away from the iguana for the iguana to receive the UV effect from the light. The reason why UV light is so important to the iguana is that the UV light triggers the release of vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is the vitamin that allows the absorption of calcium. Iguanas cannot utilize dietary D3; in fact it can be harmful. They must receive it from UV radiation

Iguanas are NOT easy-care pets! Actually, I have yet to meet an "easy-care" pet of any species, but that's another matter. Fact is, regardless of what pet stores tell you, Giant Green Iguanas become GIANTS. They grow very large (5-6 feet), can be aggressive when adults, and require expensive equipment, time-consuming meal preparation, huge enclosures ... lack of sufficient UVA/UVB lighting (through which the iguana produces vitamin D3, which is necessary for the iguana's liver and kidneys to convert dietary calcium to a usable form); improper diet (too low in calcium, too high in phosphorus, or, alternatively, too high in oxalic acid); or an environment that is too cool (preventing normal digestion and hence, absorption of dietary calcium).

JULIA CORBETT Robotic Iguanas A visit to a rainforest in the suburbs,

n a ledge in a cliff face, a small brown iguana raises his head and says to the chartreuse iguana perched above him, "So, you wanna piece of me or what?" Soon the iguanas, joined by some toucans and macaws, burst into song: "Right here in the jungle mon, that's the life for me." Lights strobe, the toucans flap their wings, and the iguanas bob their robotic heads. On cue, waiters and waitresses join in the singing, waving strips of brightly colored fabric. A toucan shouts, "Hasta la vista baby!" as our waiter leans over and asks, "Who had the shrimp?"
Coming here was my idea. I had returned to Salt Lake City from a summer of outdoor experiences while millions of my fellow humans tuned into "Survivor" and hundreds stood in line at the new Mayan theme restaurant in the suburbs. A combination of stifling late August temperatures, unhealthy levels of smoggy ozone, and thick smoke from dozens of wildfires raging in the West left me feeling lethargic and listless. I called a colleague. "Chris," I said, "as people who teach environmental communication, we really ought to check out this restaurant with the Mayan jungle theme." To my surprise, she didn't hesitate.

76. The Jamaican Iguana Page
A page dedicated to the conservation of these wonderful lizards. Also has a forum pertaining to all subspecies of iguanas and Iguana breeding, or keeping.
http://www.kingsnake.com/iguana/index.html

The Jamaican Iguana belongs to the subfamily Iguaninae, within the family of Iguanid lizards comprising 31 species. Many of these lizards attain very large body size and all feed predominantly on plants. The genus Cyclura has eight species and is restricted to the northern part of the Caribbean. The Jamaican Iguana is endemic to Jamaica and reaches a body length of up to 150cm. or more, making it the islands largest native land animal. It was believed extinct since a remnant population on Goat Island, off Jamaica's south coast, disappeared in the 1940's. However, a carcass of one was discovered in the Jamaica's Hellshire Hills in 1970. Then in June 1990 a hunter and his dog cornered a male specimen which was brought to Hope Zoo. As a result the Jamaican Iguana Research and Conservation Group was founded. Supported by large numbers of volunteers, some 7500 man hours were spent methodically surveying the forest. Animals heard and seen provided estimates of at least 15 iguanas surviving in the area and the very first photographs of Jamaican iguanas were taken in the wild. The Hellshire Hill's, which represent an outstanding example of unspoilt dry limestone forest, are located west of Kingston, froming a peninisula which measures abou 10 x 15km. The area where most sightings have been made is some 4 kilometers long, much of which forms a steep sided natural crater.
