Nutrition Feeding Green iguanas, Green iguanas have fairly specific nutritional needs, and winging it can put your dear pet in danger of illness.

Nutrition:
Feeding Green Iguanas
If you own a green iguana, no doubt you've seen lots of information about what to feed your pet. Unfortunately, much of the information that is on the market is misleading. Green iguanas have fairly specific nutritional needs, and winging it can put your dear pet in danger of illness. In fact, many problems that veterinarians see in exotic pets are caused by poor at-home care, including poor nutrition. If you do not already have one, find your pet a veterinarian who treats iguanas. Not all veterinarians do, so it may take some work on your part. But it's well worth it. Iguanas in the wild are strict herbivores. They tend to eat many small meals throughout the day, and their natural eating habits lean toward a diet of fiber and plant protein, with very little fat. When choosing food for your iguana, it's important to select different kinds of plant-based food in the right proportions: 90 percent should be vegetables and 10 percent fruits. While iguanas do enjoy the sweeter fruit choices, fruit doesn't have the same mineral and vitamin content as vegetables. To avoid getting your pet hooked on just a few foods, be sure to feed a wide selection of appropriate foods in the right proportions. In these cases, fresh foods are best, with frozen coming in second and canned coming in last. Here is a list of some appropriate vegetables to feed your iguana. It's best to serve them raw; just be sure to wash them well.

In Memory of Tashmoo - Rest in Peace Welcome! Welcome to Reptiles among other things! This is Pugsley here and he is the mascot of these pages. He is an 11-12 year old male Green Iguana that I have had since March of 1994. He is a really good boy. None of that ugly breeding aggression so common in the male of the species. Click on the Iguanas link over on the left to learn more about him and iguanas in general. Elsewhere on my site you will find information on a wide variety of reptiles that I keep in my home. Care sheets, pictures and links abound. Meet Pete! Pete (Cyclura nubila caymanensis probably crossed with some nubila nubila) is the newest addition to the Reptilecare family. He came as an adoption on May 2, 2003. He came from a wonderful caring family that had to give him up for a variety of reasons. We welcome him here! For now you can see pictures of him here . Sorry, still no web page for him. He is chock full of personality and I hope to do a page for him soon.

Why Train an Iguana?
Why train an iguana at all? Well, here are some practical uses I envison:
  • Picking up the iguana without a struggle . Some iguanas are tame, but many are not. My Carmen, for instance, was largely ignored until we adopted her at age 2-1/2. She shies away from human hands. Being able to pick her up with her consent and even her participation will increase our enjoyment of her and her relaxation around us.
  • Pooping on cue or in a certain location . I used positive reinforcement training to teach Carmen to poop in the tub within 30 seconds or so of being put into it. This means that I can poop her quickly in the morning, and she almost never goes again throughout the day. Very convenient!
  • Targeting to various locations. Using your hand or a "target stick" (stick with a ball stuck on top) you can move your iguana around without touching him. If he will follow a target stick, you can get your male iguana, who is in the throes of his "heat" period, safely into a carrier to go to the vet, into his enclosure, etc. I know someone who taught all this using a target stick! I'm not sure how far I'll go with this myself, since I have a female, but I think I'd go for it if I had a male!
  • You name it!

27. Common Diseases Of Pet Iguanas
From Ask Dr. Petra, this site has information about some of the more common afflictions for iguanas.
http://www.drpetra.com/Exotics/Common Diseases of Iguanas.htm
COMMON DISEASES OF PET IGUANAS What are some of the common diseases of pet iguanas? Common conditions of pet iguanas include metabolic bone disease, infectious stomatitis (mouth rot), parasites, abscesses, and hypervitaminosis D. What are the signs of these diseases? Metabolic bone disease, probably the most common condition of pet iguanas, is most often caused by feeding an improper diet that is low in calcium or Vitamin D and high in phosphorus. Common signs include swelling of the lower jaw and/or swelling of the hind-limbs. As the condition progresses, muscle twitching, loss of appetite, and loss of energy (lethargy) are seen. Infectious Stomatitis (Mouth Rot) is seen as pinpoint hemorrhages on the gums or an excess amount of thick mucus, often like cottage cheese, in the mouth. Parasites, especially pinworms, are common in pet iguanas. They often cause no clinical signs and are detected on an annual fecal examination. They may, however, cause diarrhea or weight loss. Abscesses, commonly seen in pet iguanas, appear as hard tumor-like swellings anywhere on the pet's body.

What to Expect From a Pet Iguana
Iguanas are one of the more recent "fad" pets, becoming readily available in many pet stores, often at very low prices. These are young iguanas that don't seem to be too difficult to care for, a myth often perpetuated by retailers hoping to sell them. Of course, they are very cute too! But, as with all reptiles, iguanas have fairly strict feeding and housing requirements. And they grow, often very large (if they survive) and they can be difficult to tame and become aggressive. This is not to say that iguanas cannot make good pets - but they need the proper care right from the start, and owners need to have the right expectations. Melissa Kaplan, who authors what I would consider to be the best reptile site on the Net, has written an article entitled "

What to Expect with a New Iguana
Taming is also a balance between not pushing too hard and showing the iguana who is in charge. You have to be firm and persistent without completely stressing out the iguana. At the same time, if the iguana is aggressive or struggles and you immediately back off or put him down, your iguana thinks he has "won" and thinks that when he is aggressive he will get his way. This may be easier said than done when an iguana is scratching you or trying to bite or lash you with his tail, but try to make it clear that you are making the decisions and in charge of the interaction.

Quick Facts
The green iguana is a reptile found throughout Central and South America. While it is not generally an endangered animal in some places, like Belize, it is because of hunting. Large females are the favorite individuals to harvest. Unfortunately, these same individuals are critical to the reproductive success of the species. As a food source, the green iguana is also known as the " Bamboo Chicken The Belize Zoo, under the guidance of Tony Gerel , has an " Iguana Farming " project to help reduce the pressures of hunting wild iguana.
Iguana Vocabulary:
Physical Appearance: Full-grown green iguanas are usually between four and six feet, although they have been known to grow up to seven feet long. This includes the tail, however, which can make up about half the body length and, in addition to its green color, has black stripes. Green iguanas, not surprisingly, are green in color, but can be found in many different shade ranging from bright green, to a dull, grayish-green. Their skin is rough, with a set of pointy scales along the iguana's back. Green iguanas have long fingers and claws to help them climb and grasp. Geographic Range: The green iguana is found over a large geographic area, from Mexico to southern Brazil and Paraguay, as well as on the Caribbean Islands.
