Theme: Social Studies/Science Learning Level: 6-7 Style: Thematic State Submitter: TN Frenchie Fortenberry , Cameron Middle, Nashville Public Schools UOP title: The Iditarod, "The Last Race", AND Alaska, "The Last Frontier" INVITATION How do the culture, climate, history, animals, people, and geographic regions of Alaska cause the state to be called "The Last Frontier"? What is the Iditarod, "The Last Great Race" and why is it a significant event in Alaska today? STANDARDS Students will identify and demonstrate an understanding of the cultures and human patterns of places and regions of the world. To achieve this standard, the learner will: a. know the physical and human characteristics of places, b. understand the characteristics, distribution and migration of human populations on Earth's surface. TASKS 1. To peak interest in the unit, teacher will distribute selected excerpts from the nonfiction book, Woodsong, by Gary Paulsen to pairs of students. Students will read excerpts and discuss the following questions with a partner: What is the event portrayed in this text?; Where does it take place?; Did these situations really happen? 2. Students will engage in general discussion of what they know about Alaska and the Iditarod race. Teacher will answer the questions about the book and talk briefly about the author.
