Dave Dalton arrived in 3rd place, at 48 minutes after midnight , Wednesday Feb. 26th...with all 14 of his dogs pulling in harness!
In his 14th Yukon Quest, Dave recorded his best ever placing (7th in 1997 was his previous best). A crowd of onlookers cheered as the team moved from the dark of the trail into the bright lights of the Finish Chute. Dalton didn't single out any one dog's efforts, instead he credited his entire team, saying that every dog worked hard all race long.
"Arriving in Eagle, I realized that not only could we finish well, but that all my dogs were looking very good,"

CURRICULUM AREAS: healthful living , social studies, language arts, math computer EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS : tumbling mats, balance beams, yarnballs, mini-trampolines, scooters, cones, jump ropes, paper/pencils. WEBSITES: See Internet Sites LESSON PLAN: Students come into the multipurpose room and sit on the floor at the "Iditarod" display that has been taped to a wall. Information about the race included in the display was found on Internet sites . Using the display as a visual aid, students are introduced to the Alaskan Iditarod Race. For the lesson, students will be traveling to ten stations that are designed using the Iditarod theme. Each station is named after an actual checkpoint in the race. Each station is marked with it's name, direction for completing the station and the number of points scored at the station. The display serves as one station where students answer questions about the race. In any order they wish, students try to complete each of the 10 stations during the designated time (approximately 30 minutes). Points are scored at each station. A maximum of 1,151 points may be scored. This total is the same as the number of miles in the race (1,151 miles).

What You Can Do Fortunately, more and more corporations are discovering the truth behind the Iditarod spectacle and are withdrawing their support. Please contact the 2004 Iditarod sponsors immediately
Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper educating people about the suffering endured by dogs forced to participate in this spectacle.
If your area schools follow the progress of the Iditarod participants as a part of their curricula, contact principals and the school board to educate them about the reality of this cruel event. Ask them to incorporate Share the World, a program that teaches children respect and compassion for animals. You can find more information and request copies of the packet at ShareTheWorld.com

Introduction
You will soon begin a wild adventure through the wilderness of Alaska. Traveling by dogsled you will race over tundra, cross two mountain ranges, follow two rivers, and take your team across a frozen stretch of ocean on the shelf ice of the Bering Sea. From Anchorage to Nome you will travel about 1,150 miles and stop at 26 check points along the trail. So, you’ll need to be tough and keep a good sense of humor even when you are cold, tired and fed up! The Iditarod, also known as the Last Great Race, takes place in Alaska the first weekend of every March. Iditarod, an old Athabascan Indian word means “Haiditarod” or “the distant place.” Actually, the Iditarod began a long time ago, in 1925. This race wasn’t for fun; it was to save the lives of the people of Nome. The village of Nome was threatened with a diphtheria epidemic and needed medicine/serum that could keep people from catching this disease. It was winter and flying was too dangerous in the pioneer days so, it was decided that the serum should be sent by train from Anchorage to Nenana and then relayed by dog team from there to Nome. The dog mushers, who were mostly native, usually hauled freight and carried mail in their sleds.

Anchorage Winter Adventures
The Iditarod, Flightseeing, Skiing and Dining
Thousands jammed the streets to cheer drivers and teams for the ceremonial start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. It's called "The Last Great Race" and, around Alaska, interest in the Iditarod dwarfs the Super Bowl or any other event. Throughout Alaska, the events leading up to the race dominate the media, continuing for days until the finish. My wife Mary and I were sampling the winter activities around Anchorage, and we quickly got caught up in the electric mood of the start of Alaska’s most famous sporting event.
Itarod sleddog team at the starting ceremony At the ceremonial start many viewers carried newspapers that featured photos and biographies of each entrant. Strolling vendors offered pins, hats, posters and other race souvenirs, while others sold cooked reindeer sausage, beverages and other temptations. Local favorites like Jeff King, Dee Dee Jonrowe and Martin Buser loped their sled dog teams through the sprawling block party to boisterous cheers and whoops.

How Amazon herbs changed the history
of the world-famous Iditarod sled dog race
Sixteen gung-ho dogs linked and ready to pull a sled, supplies, and a musher are a sight to behold. The dogs radiate power and energy and have no other desire than to pull the sled to its final destination. Once on the trail, each dog has a clear-cut job. Some trade off being the leader, others act as guides to keep the sled traveling on the right trail, and the strongest dogs balance the sled around curves. They work in unison . And they depend on the true leader of the sled, the musher, to lead them to their destination as quickly and safely as possible. A musher's first concern is always the well-being of his or her dogs. That's why Jamie Nelson of Togo, Minnesota, was determined to run the world-famous Iditarod sled dog race with a supply of herbs from the Amazon Rainforest.
