Archived Race Logs self.top.location="http://www.gis.net/~kmorgan/iditarod/Iditarod" Every March my students become involved in "The Last Great Race on Earth," the Iditarod. This exciting race pits man and animal against the forces of nature. Dog sled teams race over jagged mountain ranges, frozen rivers, dense forests, desolate tundra and miles of windswept coast. The teams experience temperatures far below zero, winds that can cause a complete loss of visibility, the hazards of ice, long hours of darkness and treacherous climbs. From Anchorage, in south central Alaska, to Nome on the Bering Sea coast, each team of 12 to 16 dogs and their musher cover over 1,200 miles in up to two weeks.
Read " How the Iditarod Got Started ." The Serum Run: Blazing the Iditarod Trail written by Debbie Miller and illustrated by Jon Van Zyle. Read my review. In March of 2000, I followed the Iditarod with my own bush pilot! We traveled the Iditarod trail all the way to Nome, stopping at the checkpoints along the way. I kept in contact with the school community via Internet and this web site. I wrote daily journal reports and sent back lots of pictures. The experience far exceeded my expectations! I met lots of mushers, Iditarod Trail Committee officials, and many wonderful people in the villages.

Iditarod official site
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) Sixty-four dog teams pushed off Monday on the frozen Chena River, launching the 31st Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race along a new route drawn up because of Alaska's unusually warm winter. Mushers and dogs lining up for the "restart" were enjoying snow, something they didn't have for Saturday's ceremonial start in Anchorage. Amid the din of barking dogs, several thousand fans turned out to witness the Iditarod's first appearance in Fairbanks. An unusually warm season and lack of snow has created the oddest Iditarod since the 1,100-mile race to Nome began in 1973. It's the first time the race has started so far north and with a revised route that extends the trail by 70 miles and leaves a lot of unknowns, even for veteran mushers. "I don't know what to expect, and that's the neat and intimidating thing about this year," musher Jon Little said before setting out on the trail. "I don't know what's around the next corner."

The iditarod the First Day of the Last Great Race . It started threequarters of a century ago with a serum run from Anchorage
http://www.alaska.net/~design/scenes/iditarod/iditarod.html
The Iditarod:
the First Day of the "Last Great Race"
I t started three-quarters of a century ago with a serum run from Anchorage to the coastal community of Nome in Northwest Alaska. There were no roads then between the two communities more than 1,000 miles apart, and there are none today. A train took the serum as far as Nenana. It was carried for the last 674 miles by dogsled. A relay of 20 mushers responded to the medical emergency a diphtheria epidemic. T he photos on this page are from the 1996 race. On March 2nd, 1996, about 900 dogs and their mushers gathered on Fourth Avenue in downtown Anchorage to set off on a similar trip. This time it was simply for the adventure of it. Several were hoping to win some of the $300,000 prize money in the 24th running of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race but most could not expect to even meet their expenses. (A local sports writer referred to $100,000 dog kennels in a story about a musher he described as an exception to that trend.) O n the first day of the race, 60 mushers - most of them Alaskans but some from as far away as Norway, Italy and Japan - raced 20 miles from downtown Anchorage to Eagle River.

Iditarod official site
Humane Society of the United States KALTAG, Alaska (AP) Halfway into the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, poor trail conditions have forced yet another route change, officials said Saturday. Race officials decided to drop the last leg of the route between Anvik and Shageluk late Friday night after trail breaking crews encountered impassable conditions, Iditarod executive director Stan Hooley said Saturday. "Most of the stretch between Anvik and Shageluk is very icy with no snow cover," Hooley said. "There's really no way to navigate it." Race Marshal Mark Nordman said organizers immediately notified leading mushers, including Jeff King, Norwegian Robert Sorlie, Ramy Brooks and defending champion Martin Buser. By Saturday morning, the remaining field of 56 mushers had been notified. "The reaction has been great," Nordman said at the Anvik checkpoint, the new turnaround site of the race. "I think the mushers trust me, so when I make a call saying this isn't safe, they say 'Fine."'
