DOE News Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 5, 2000 Students Use Science and Engineering Skills in Robot Challenge Robotic vehicles designed, built and operated by students will soon be roaming a make-believe Martian landscape, overcoming obstacles and processing electronic commands to complete assigned missions. ROBO Challenge 2000 takes place Wednesday, May 10, starting at 3 p.m. at Hillcrest High School, 2800 Owen St., Idaho Falls. The program is sponsored by the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory and the Eastern Idaho Vocational Cooperative for Region Six school district. Region Six includes Idaho Falls, Bonneville, Shelley, Firth and Ririe schools. This is the third year of the ROBO Challenge. The 1998 Challenge involved students from the eighth grade Science Enhancement Lab for Region Six. The program expanded in the 1999 ROBO Challenge to include ninth graders, and this year's ROBO Challenge 2000 includes tenth graders. Students in the eighth, ninth and tenth grades will compete to solve real world problems by applying science and engineering principles learned in the classroom. Each grade level presents students increasingly more demanding challenges in building remotely controlled rovers to complete missions. During the previous two years, students were given problems with specific operating conditions and design requirements for their rover vehicles. The missions were tailored to Lego Dacta and Mindstorm kits, which provide the building materials and vehicle programming controls. These include sensors and the ability to navigate over and around obstacles to a specific location. ROBO Challenge 2000 involves tenth grade participants and includes the educational "Boe Bot" kit from Parallax, Inc. The kit provides students the fundamental building blocks to develop a robot that can perform simple autonomous or self- controlled missions. Students at this level will learn about basic electronic principles, how pulse width modulation is used to control motors, how to interface to motors and basic programming skills. Additional information on the program is available from Julene Messick, 526-0318.

A. ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
A parent or guardian of any child who is at least seven years old at the beginning of the school year, but not yet 16, is required by Idaho law to have that child instructed in subjects commonly and usually taught in the public schools of the State of Idaho. Idaho Code 33-202 requires a child be instructed in a public, private or parochial school, unless the child is comparably instructed. Kindergarten, however, is an option that school districts may elect to provide.
The law requires that a child be five years old by September 1st of the school year to enter kindergarten or six by September 1st to enter first grade. If a child has attended an out-of-state kindergarten for 450 hours, the child is allowed to enter first grade even if the child is not six years old by September 1st. The school age of resident exceptional/disabled children is three. 1. MINIMUM IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
