News From The Highly Qualified Teacher Front
IOWA: As reported in today's Des Moines Register, state officials are saying "Iowa will have little trouble meeting new federal rules that require all teachers to be 'highly qualified' within three years." The paper goes on to note: "Research during the past 10 years has shown that students did better academically when taught by teachers who were highly knowledgeable in the subjects they taught. Students of ill-prepared or ineffective teachers did poorly in school, the studies showed. Once teachers in Iowa obtain their standard license, they must regularly take additional courses to stay current in teaching practices and the subject they teach. 'You must demonstrate that you come in competent and remain competent throughout your career,' said Judy Jeffrey, who oversees the Iowa Department of Education's early childhood, elementary and secondary education department." We seek to help students develop visual literacy and problem-solving skills, to explore confidently the many avenues of technical and creative expression, and to develop an appreciation for craftsmanship. Through such experiences the students are also encouraged to see how their own creative endeavors relate to other disciplines within the liberal arts. For art students to flourish, more is needed than the skills outlined above. They also require the stimulus of challenging exhibitions and an awareness of the rich resources of the regional and local community. Assignments in both the practical and art history courses frequently require students to take advantage of high quality exhibitions at the Boise Art Museum, the galleries of Boise State University and other venues. On campus, the Rosenthal Gallery of Art shows work by professional artists, items from the College's western and ethnographic collections, and provides a forum for local high schools to display the art of their best students.

Idaho Teachers Give up Day’s Pay for Audiologist
by Susan Boswell What’s the value of a school-based audiologist? Priceless, said teachers in Idaho’s Twin Falls School District. As states struggle with record budget deficits, Dennis Robinson—the district’s only audiologist—was able to keep his job only after nearly 100 elementary-school teachers gave up a day’s pay to help cover his salary. Robinson’s saga began nearly a year ago, when he opened the local newspaper and was startled to learn that his job of 25 years was on the line. Faced with a $1.1 million state budget shortfall, the school board did not renew Robinson’s contract, along with 12 other positions it determined would have the least negative impact on students if eliminated.
