Guadalajara - Day Six Thursday in Guadalajara, the capitol of Idaho's sister state of Jalisco, was an action-packed day for the Idaho trade mission delegation. First, everyone gathered in a meeting room of the hotel for a briefing on doing business in Jalisco from U.S. Consul General Ed Wilkinson and members of his staff. Jaime Reyes, General Manager of Hewlett-Packard's Guadalajara division, discussed the opportunities that exist here for high technology companies, including manufacturing computer components and developing software. HP makes 50,000 printers a month in Guadalajara, and employs 450 people. 8,000 Jaliscans attribute their jobs to HP. Following the briefing, the Idahoans visited Manuel M. Dieguez School. Guadalajara, Mexico - October 21 The second official day of Idaho's largest-ever trade mission to Mexico started with members of the delegation visiting the American Chamber of Commerce in Guadalajara. Governor Dirk Kempthorne spoke to the business group about Idaho and business prospects for two-way trade between the states of Idaho and Jalisco. Governor Kempthorne addresses a meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce in Guadalajara. The Governor said Idaho's growing Hispanic population is looking for familiar products on Idaho grocery store shelves, and there's a market for Mexican companies to export to Idaho. In turn, Idaho producers, including wheat, potatoes and cattle are looking for markets in Mexico. After visiting the Chamber, a highlight for the Idahoans: Their trip to Manuel M. Dieguez school. This is Governor Kempthorne's third visit to the school. On his firsts trips in 1999 and 2001, Idaho presented the school with sports equipment and computers. This time, the gift from the students of Idaho was a public address system. Hewlett-Packard's Guadalajara facility helped purchase the system. The entire student body of Manuel M. The Idaho Digital Learning Academy (IDLA) is a statewide, web-based educational program set up under the direction of the Idaho State Department of Education and Idaho State Legislature ( House Bill 534 ) to provide Idaho students with greater access to a diverse assortment of courses.
